Baby Got Gas? A Guide to Baby Indigestion

Have you ever heard of baby indigestion? Do you even know what that is? Just think of heartburn and indigestion and how it can make you feel. The deep pressure in your chest and abdomen is enough to make you feel like you’re having a heart attack. Now imagine that feeling on a 2-week-old baby. YIKEES!!! I can tell you that whatever you feel is 100% amplified in your child. The fact that he cannot express what he feels also contributes to the intense pain felt by the child. They can’t say “mommy, my stomach hurts”.

What causes baby indigestion?

Well, there may be several reasons for adults, but I think we can safely rule out alcohol consumption, smoking and eating spicy food for babies! It is also quite rare for babies to have stomach ulcers or gallstones. This means we can focus on the 2 main causes of indigestion in babies, food allergies and sensitivities. So now that we have a general idea of the possible causes of baby indigestion; how can we know if our baby has a digestive disorder?

Symptoms of baby indigestion may include:

• Anxiety and/or crying spells that may stop after the gas subsides

• Irritability

• Constipation

• Insomnia

• Curds of undigested food in the stool (well, let’s just call it poop, that’s what it is!)

• Very smelly poop, in extreme cases even diarrhea

Now it is very important to understand one thing; and this indigestion is not a root cause or disease in itself. It’s just a symptom. So we need to find the real cause of baby’s indigestion. Therefore, make sure that the real causes of indigestion in your baby are:

• Rotten food

• Food allergies

• Food sensitivities

Spoiled food and baby indigestion

Spoiled food is not good for adults, as it can lead to all kinds of stomach problems, and it is no different for our children. Therefore, if you feed your child with formula, make sure that the best before date has not expired. You should also take extra care when sterilizing any bottles and equipment that come in contact with your baby’s formula. Make sure the water you give your baby or use to mix powdered formula is safe and boiled.

Another thing to avoid at all costs is reheating the bottles. Mothers, if you are guilty of this practice, please STOP IT IMMEDIATELY. If your baby hasn’t eaten it all, throw it away. If you are pumping breast milk, make sure you ONLY store it in a sterilized container. Cool and consume the milk within a few days, or store it in the freezer to keep it longer. Following these simple tips can significantly reduce your baby’s indigestion.

Grass!!! Now that took care of the spoiled food. Okay, so what about food allergies and how can babies be allergic to just one feed? ï Š I mean, does that even make sense? Read more.

First, the distinction between an allergy and a food sensitivity can be confusing. So how do you tell the difference and how does it relate to your baby’s indigestion?

Food allergies and sensitivities and baby digestive disorders – Formula

First, we must understand that allergies can cause severe reactions such as hives and severe rashes, vomiting, swelling of soft tissues such as ears and lips, or life-threatening anaphylactic shock reactions. Sensitivities; however, they are milder and cause indigestion, discomfort, constipation, and less severe skin rashes. You know those foods that just don’t agree with you.

It is very common for babies to be allergic or sensitive to cow protein. Take comfort in the fact that most people grow out of this by the time they are a year old, but the first year can be tricky. Formula-fed moms should switch to a soy-based formula or formula made specifically for babies who are sensitive to cow protein.

Oh, there is a word of caution; that is, it is common for babies who are sensitive to cow protein to also have a sensitivity to soy protein. However, you can be sure that there are formulas that do not contain soy or cow’s milk.

Food allergies and sensitivities, as well as baby digestive disorders – Breastfeeding

If you are breastfeeding, eliminate all dairy products from your diet. The reason for this is that the food you eat reaches the child through the milk. Because of this, breast milk may contain traces of cow’s milk protein from the dairy products you consume. So, I mean, cut out ALL dairy if you want to reduce your baby’s indigestion. Start reading food labels!!

Trust me, I know it sucks, I’ve done it in the past. You may have a headache and feel like crap for a few days while your body detoxes and processes the dairy. Basically, you will go through a bit of a retreat. Cheese as a drug…who knew?

The Fix – replace cow’s milk with goat’s milk, as this is usually quite well tolerated. After breastfeeding my kids for 6 months, I switched them both to goat milk and guess what? They still love it. Most are available at major grocery stores and can be frozen if you need a supply!

So how can you relieve your baby of baby indigestion?

You can use gripe water for “instant” relief of baby’s indigestion. You can get this at any drugstore, and many health food stores have alternatives that contain all natural ingredients. I’ve also tried some over the counter pills – most manufacturers refer to indigestion as colic, so look for products labeled Colic Relief or something similar. The label “colic” is a bit of a misnomer because colic in babies has nothing to do with indigestion, but that’s a discussion for another newsletter!

He can also give abdominal massages and baby enemas to relieve indigestion. Keep in mind, however, that none of these “instant relief” techniques target the cause of the indigestion; only the symptoms are treated.

A longer-term solution to the problem is to look for food sensitivities and allergies, which can primarily cause indigestion.

How to do this?

By analyzing a stool sample taken from your baby, your doctor can determine whether undigested cow protein is present and whether your baby is sensitive to dairy products.

As always, I recommend talking to your doctor or naturopath about your baby’s symptoms if you are concerned.
