Best Top 5 Autumn Traditions & Events Near Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, Fussen
1. Spectacular Herds of Cows-Down-The-Mountains Festival (“Viehscheid” or “Almabtrieb” in German) throughout September
Every spring, herds of cows are brought up to the high pastures to feed on the nutritious grass of the alpine mountains. They stay there all summer and a shepherd looks after them.
Each year in September, these herds are led back to the valley to be returned to their owners in a spectacular event where hundreds of cows are driven down the valley together. To celebrate a successful summer with no accidents or lost animals, the cow(s) are elaborately decorated and often compete for the best decoration. This event is also celebrated with local music, dance events and beer tents in every town and village.
2. Old-fashioned cattle market in Buching village (5 km from Schwangau / Neuschwanstein) at the end of September
At the end of September, the neighboring village of Schwangau, Buching/Halblech, organizes the traditional cattle market. Just like in the old days, farmers haggle over prices and agree with a handshake.
Around 9:30 in the morning, music accompanies the decorated cattle as they enter the market square. Unlike other cattle markets in Buching, all the cattle will be decorated and you will also find market stalls selling souvenirs and local products.
3. Alphorn mass on the “Breitenberg” mountain (12 km from Schwangau) at the end of September
At the end of September (September 26, 2010), more than 100 Alphorn musicians will play in a special service on top of the Breitenberg hill in Pfronten. If you want to see this special event, go to the Breitenberg cable car and be there at the time starting at 10 am.
4. St Colomans Horse Festival in Schwangau & Other Equestrian Parades from mid-October to the end of November
Every second Sunday in October, Schwangau celebrates a breathtaking event: the St. Colomans Festival. In honor of St. Coloman, an Irish missionary, over 200 beautifully decorated horses ride from the mayor’s house to St. Coloman’s Church for an outdoor service. Following the service and according to the old tradition, the equestrian procession goes around the church three times, widely, before everyone starts celebrating in several beer tents and outdoor areas organized for the day.
At least 10 other similar horse parades are held from October to November in various villages of the Neuschwanstein district.
5. “Saint Nicholas and Crampus” event in Fussen – At the beginning of December
On December 6th, Germans celebrate “St. Nikolaus,” who distributes candy to good children and sends “Campus” (a version of the devil) to punish misbehaving children.
In the historic town of Fussen, groups of people dressed as Crampus run around town with bells and sticks to “scare” anyone who may have misbehaved during the year.
From the end of November to December 23, beautiful Christmas markets await you in the towns and villages around Neuschwanstein Castle. Germans decorate their houses and the atmosphere becomes magical.
