Leading a Slow Life With Toddlers

In today’s world, parents are bombarded by marketers and advertisers who convey the message that to be a good parent who provides physical and creative experiences, you need to enroll your child in ballet, drama or music classes. class, gymnastics, or all of the above. Is this really the best, most effective way to raise children? If not, what is the alternative?

In my opinion, “living slow” is the way to go. What does this mean? This means sticking to a routine, whether your children are babies, toddlers or school-aged. This means going to the park, doing crafts or baking together. This means going on a date to a friend’s house and leaving alone time so your child can experience independent play and creativity. It also means taking part in family activities in the safest, most comforting place – the home. And that means making a conscious decision about which activities to engage in instead of jumping on the class bandwagon.

There are many reasons for a slow life, but here are just a few:

1) Those children who have time to play alone, in a quiet environment, can be creative, solve problems, think about the words they learned that day, what they saw, and what they wondered about. They also become self-sufficient and their self-esteem improves because they learn how they like to spend time with themselves.

2) Children who spend quality “down time” with their families usually have a healthy self-esteem because they feel that they are part of something important. They also feel good because they see that their parents “love” them, not just “love them”.

3) Children who have enough time to play are able to develop naturally, which means they stay at their natural, age-appropriate age, rather than having to grow up too fast while learning how to cope with whatever their busy schedule throws at them.

4) Most children who live a slow life tend to do better in school and feel better about going to school and learning. Homework is usually not even a battle.

5) Children who live a slow life are typically better behaved and respect the rules set by their parents.

Now that we know the benefits, what does a typical slow life look like? It depends on the age, so this week I’ll be talking about toddlers and then next week I’ll move on to school age kids.

A good routine for toddlers

7:00, if he is awake, give him milk, then leave him in the bedroom to play, read, talk to himself. Just make sure the room is completely childproof.

After an hour of alone time (or a bit longer if you prefer), bring them into the main living room to play and listen to children’s music, high-quality TV or DVDs while you prepare breakfast.

9:00 Breakfast feeding
9:30 more playtime with music on, then bed at 10:00 for first nap if YOU ARE under 18 months
9.30am: go to playgroup or swim, run errands, go for a walk, visit a friend or do an art activity at home, then a short walk if over 18 months (or has given up morning naps)

Noon fodder lunch

12:30 bedtime for a 2-2 1/2 hour nap (18 months or older) OR
12:30/1 PM go to playgroup or swim, run errands, go for a walk, go to the park, go to a friend’s house, or do an art activity together (if they are under 18 months and still taking morning and afternoon naps)
3pm or 4pm put down for 2nd nap (18 months or younger) OR
15:00 read books together, then have a snack and allow individual play time
16:00 Choose a joint activity.

The ideas are:
– have a friend
– perform artistic activities
– Build a puzzle or play together with bricks or Lego
– bake something together
– take a bath while reading a book in the bathroom
– go for a walk with the list of sights (use pictures for young children) – How many things can you see on the list today?

17:00 Allow time for individual games or watching TV or DVD while you prepare dinner
18:00 Let’s have dinner with the family (if the child has finished and becomes restless, they can play freely while mom and dad are having a good time)
19:00 bathe for 15 minutes (optional), get dressed, give milk, brush teeth, put in sleeping bag in semi-darkness, then go to bed with a kiss: “I love you. Sleep well. see you in the morning” and close the door by 7 am the next morning .

Slow living is truly beneficial for both children and parents. Children have enough time to explore and learn, and parents can live a less stressful life and enjoy their children more than if they were competing with endless activities or responsibilities. Try it and feel the benefits!
