Nocturnal Enuresis (Bed-Wetting) – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment
Bedwetting is bedwetting that occurs in children 5 years of age or older with at least 1-2 episodes per week for at least three months. Nocturnal enuresis can be primary or secondary. Most children 7 years of age or younger with bedwetting usually outgrow the condition and therefore do not require treatment. Children over 8 years of age with bedwetting may require treatment, as it can be embarrassing for the child and parents, and can affect the child’s academic performance and social relationships with others.
Nocturnal urination is called “Shayya Mootra” in Ayurveda. Most are Ayurvedic doctors
treat this condition according to associated conditions or causes. Those who are prone to constipation are given Arogyavardhini and Chandraprabha vati. Krumimudgar ras or Krumikuthar ras can be given if there is a history of worms or indications of such. In case of general weakness, Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) kalpa or Shatavari Ghruta is taken orally and Mahanarayan oil is used to massage the body. Children with loss of appetite, indigestion and loose movement are given Sanjeevani vati (mainly Semicarpus anacardium) and Pippalyadi decoction (mainly containing Piper longum). Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Ajvayan (Hyoscyamus niger), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Garlic, Ginger, Jeera (Cuminum cyminum), Pudina (Mentha spicata) and Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) are regularly included in the daily diet. Urinary tract infection is treated with medicines like Gokshuradi Guggulu. Herbal medicines like Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) and Shankapushpi (Consecora decussata) are used to reduce stress.
A number of herbal combinations are available to improve neuromuscular tone and strength, thereby increasing bladder continence. Generally, with these drugs, most children recover within 3-4 months of treatment. A select few may require one or two additional courses of shorter duration.
It is worth having an early dinner and stopping fluid intake two hours before going to bed. The child should be encouraged to empty the bladder at frequent intervals before going to bed. The child should also be encouraged to relieve stress and anxiety. In case of any underlying disease, timely treatment must be carried out.
