Tips on White Cloud Minnow Care and Breeding

white cloud saliva (Tanichthys albonubes)like all real boys, they are members of the family Cyprinidae, better known as the carp family. White clouds are primarily a cold-water species native to China. They were first discovered in the 1930s on White Cloud Mountain in China’s Guangdong Province by Boy Scout Leader Tan. The brilliant name of the white cloud minnow, Tanichthysliteral translation Tan hala.

Unfortunately, White Cloud Mountain’s popularity as a tourist attraction and overfishing from the booming aquarium trade of the post-World War II era soon led to the demise of the native population in the region. Between 1980 and 2001, this species was not observed in any reports. It was feared that the white cloudbone would be driven into extinction. But in a day and age when human encroachment on native habitats threatens the existence of many species, nature has persevered, at least in the case of the white cloud mussel. While these minnows struggled for existence atop White Cloud Mountain, additional populations were discovered in isolated regions along the Guangdong coast and in Quang Ninh province in northeastern Vietnam. In 2007, an established population of this species was found on Hainan Island, south of Guandong Province. This discovery indicates that Hainan Island and Guangdong Province were landlocked at some point in the distant past. The Chinese government currently lists white-crowned cats as an endangered species in their natural habitat. All white clouds sold in the aquarium industry are commercial.

Like all humpbacks, this is a relatively small species. White clouds grow up to 1.5 inches. These trinkets became hugely popular in the 1940s and 50s. So much so that they earned the nickname “Poor Man’s Neon Tetra” because they were much more affordable than their more colorful and expensive counterparts. Even today, white clouds are usually marketed under the label White Cloud Tetras. They are also sold as Cardinal fish, Canton and China Danio, even though they have nothing to do with the danio species.

In their wild habitat, white cloud mussels are genetically identical. Crossbreeding the species that became known as the Golden Cloud resulted in a longer-finned version named the Meteor Minnow. Further genetic manipulation between the two led to the development of the Golden Meteor Minnow. The latter genetic variation of this species has resulted in most of the natural pigmentation of the parent species, the Blonde Cloud, being stripped of its natural motley.

Regardless of genetic variation, white clouds are extremely hardy fish. An excellent choice for first-time aquarium owners. Their ability to thrive in a wide range of environmental conditions makes them ideal starter fish for cycling new aquariums. These bastards are cold water species by nature. Although they can survive as low as 41°F, they thrive in the 64-72°F range. This makes them ideal candidates for unheated aquariums and shared fish bowls. Despite their cold-water nature, these cats can easily tolerate the slightly higher water temperatures of the standard tropical community aquarium. A pH level between 6.0 and 8.0 is perfectly acceptable. The average lifespan of white clouds in captivity is 3-5 years.

This species does well in a community aquarium, provided they have similar-sized, temperate tankmates. It should be noted that white clouds are schooling fish. They adapt best to their new environment if they are introduced in groups of at least five people. Kept as a single specimen, this cat becomes very timid. The unnecessary stress of a lonely existence often results in a noticeable decrease in the brightness of the color palette. In an aquarium environment, these minnows are the highest and middle level swimmers. They rarely venture to the bottom of the aquarium.

In nature, white clouds are carnivores. Their diet consists of small insects, worms and crustaceans. In captivity, this species readily accepts standard garden fish foods. However, high protein supplements will help maintain their overall health, color and longevity.

Males are typically thinner than females. In specimens where the natural color pigment does not breed, the red color is more vivid in males.

Breeder White Cloud Minnows

This species reaches sexual maturity between 6 and 12 months. Adult males usually spread their fins and engage in a ritualistic courtship dance to attract the attention of females. It is common for males to try to outdo each other in the pursuit of a female during the mating cycle. Before breeding, males often bite each other, but this display of aggression rarely turns into a full-on fight.

Spawning is best suited as a breeding tank to protect unborn eggs and newly hatched fry from potential predators. A 5-gallon grow tank is sufficient. You can select a single mature pair if you wish. However, since male aggression has no serious consequences, you can place two or three males in the breeding tank with an equal or greater number of females and let nature take its course.

A pH balance of 6.5-7.5 in a temperature range of 68-75°F helps initiate the reproductive cycle. You must also provide an adequate amount of good mass as a spawning medium.

During spawning, females lay a dozen or even several hundred eggs. The eggs hatch in about two days. White clouds do not eat their eggs or young. Some may be eaten, but many survive. Therefore, the removal of adults from the breeding tank after spawning is done solely at your own discretion.

Within a few days, the fry swim freely. Newly hatched fry can be fed with infusuria or luqifry. Within a week, their diet can be changed to baby brine shrimp or finely crushed fish flakes. The fry grow to 1/2 inch in the first three months and reach full grown size within a year.
