Top 10 Benefits of Living Without TV
Think you can’t live without your electronic companion, the TV? Do you think getting rid of the TV would make your life empty and meaningless? On the contrary, living without TV can be much more peaceful, enjoyable, healthier and happier. Can you imagine…?
1. You miss all the attack ads during election season.
I haven’t seen a single attack ad in the last election – none! The negativity. The distortions. The lies. I missed it all. It was almost as much fun as skipping the negativity, lies and distortions from the daily news. Instead, I researched the issues I thought were important. If you found attack ads annoying during the last election, you might want to consider getting rid of TV for at least the next election season.
2. Your mind gets rid of commercial jingles.
I no longer have annoying advertising jingles running through my brain. I remember how annoying this was when I had a TV. I really enjoy the peace that comes with their absence. All you need to do to enjoy peace is to get rid of the TV.
3. Holidays are much less stressful.
Based on the shop displays, I can tell that the “holiday season” has begun. Otherwise, I’m almost completely detached from the annoying orgy of material squealing that urges me to buy, buy, buy. In fact, every holiday is more enjoyable without TV. Easter, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, New Years and all other holidays are much less stressful.
4. You and your children can become addicted to LEARNING.
A few weeks ago I taught my 6 year old son how to find worms online. Then he wanted to learn about birds, frogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits and snails. He searches the internet and reads as many books as he can get his hands on. Like my son, I use the internet to research and discover ideas and interests.
Some tout the educational value of TV. My experience is that TV doesn’t even compare to books and the internet when it comes to learning. However, don’t take my word for it. Test this yourself.
5. Your kids will stop nagging you about things they see in commercials.
My kids aren’t always angels, but since we got rid of the TV, they don’t nag about things like they used to. Plus, if I get them toys, they play with them a lot more. Their games are better suited to their interests. Moreover, the Pied Pipers of advertising, materialism, are no longer leading them away from existing games to the “latest/greatest” new games.
6. You can wean your family off soft drinks and other junk food.
Soft drinks are one of the main causes of the obesity epidemic. I weaned my kids off soda. After being away from the soda pop commercials for a while, I just started avoiding that isle in the supermarket. Every now and then they get a little soda as a treat. Now, however, when they are thirsty, they ask for water.
Also, when they are bored, they play. Exercise and lack of soda will help make them fitter. If you’re struggling to keep your kids fit, getting rid of the TV can make it a lot easier.
7. You lose track of the latest happenings of Paris Hilton and other major celebrities.
Without a TV, I am happily detached from the celebrity circus. Honestly, I didn’t even know who Paris Hilton was until a friend of mine mentioned her name on a forum. When it comes to celebrities, ignorance really is bliss. I have much better things to do with my time and energy. I’m sure you are too.
8. Don’t worry about how sex and violence on TV might affect your family.
This is simply not a problem. I don’t have to write to my congressman to ask the government to fix the problem or even get upset about the issue. This problem went away when I got rid of our family TV. Personally, I only think about this question as it pertains to my website. In this regard, the problem is getting worse, but only IF you have a TV.
9. It doesn’t irritate your eyes on TV.
Someone recently emailed me after becoming extremely frustrated and upset about the content on TV. He searched for “TV crap” and somehow found my website. He dropped me a note saying “TV HEART!”
That’s right, TV sucks. It can be tempting to rant and rave about trash on TV, but it also takes time and energy. The solution is simple: Don’t be nervous; just get rid of the damn tv. Your life will immediately become calmer and more pleasant.
10. You find time to realize your dreams.
After getting rid of my TV, I found myself pursuing old dreams that I had let go of over time. I am now close to realizing a dream that I originally thought would take me a lifetime. If you’ve ever said, “I don’t have time to pursue my dreams,” turn off the TV and time will magically appear.
Test yourself
It may be hard to believe that there are such benefits to living without a TV. If any of these benefits sound appealing, give it a try. Don’t take my word for it. Get rid of the TV for a month and see how your life improves. You may see some of these benefits right away, or you may have to go through a one-week withdrawal period. By the end of the month, you will probably be pleasantly surprised by the developments.
