Discover the Long-Term Problems Your Child Gets From Too Much TV – Learn How to Spot This Early
When your child watches TV, it affects them in many ways, as parents we always wonder if my child is spending too much time sitting in front of the computer and TV – to be fair, we are right to worry, believe me.
Studies have shown that children in the UK watch around 4 hours of TV a day, mostly in their bedrooms! The problem with this modern age and digital TV is that kids can watch their favorite shows 24/7, it’s not quite the same when I was a kid. The troubling problem is that there is overwhelming evidence that it can harm our children’s health.
Studies show that this contributes to our children eating more and putting on more weight, as well as a higher risk of obesity in their older years. As the time spent watching TV increases, the time spent actively playing and working decreases.
Experts say watching too much TV can affect your child’s communication skills. Children learn our language by listening to the adults around them, constantly watching TV in the background will not help your child. If your child is constantly sitting in front of the TV, he will have fewer opportunities to play and communicate with friends and family.
It can also have a detrimental effect on your child’s sleeping habits. Nowadays, it is more and more common for young children to watch TV in bed to put them to sleep, it will be the opposite because it overstimulates their brain, which can lead to sleep disorders. A good old-fashioned bedtime story is best. It is widely believed that there is a link between aggressive behavior and television viewing. This is still a subject of constant debate, as many experts have claimed that children become aggressive when they watch inappropriate programs on TV, while also restricting their speech development. An important factor to be aware of is concentration. This greatly affects your child’s attention if they watch TV all the time, and if the child does this at a very young age, i.e. under the age of 2, it is probably related to ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). As parents, television will always be there, we all watch it, most of us like something that is shown on television. The key is to simply know when to switch off. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all negative, they are a great educational resource and can broaden your child’s mind immensely if used correctly.
The moral is don’t leave your child to their own devices if you don’t know they are glued to the screen, get involved and set times when they can or can’t watch.
