The Life of Dorothea Puente

Los Angeles Times headline

March 28, 2011

Dorothea Puente, 82, died at the Central California Women’s Institution, where she had been serving her life without parole. He was sentenced to two life terms for three counts of first-degree murder. He was a Sacramento boarding house operator who was convicted of murdering his tenants in the 1990s. He died of natural causes.

Who was Dorothea Puente?

At the age of 64, her figure as a grandmother made headlines across the country. His was a gruesome story that included: victims buried in his Victorian-style home, a body found in the Sacramento River, and; more gruesome murders.

She was considered one of the coldest and most calculating female killers who ever lived. They alleged that he drugged and killed his victims to collect their disability checks. The amount he stole was about $87,000, which prosecutors say he used, among other things, for facial plastic surgery.

The early years

She was born Dorothea Gray on January 9, 1929 in California, United States. He had alcoholic parents: a father who was a cotton picker died when he was four (4) years old; and mother who was a prostitute also died when she was six (6) years old. After the death of his mother, he was sent to an orphanage, where he was claimed by his relatives a few years later.

His early childhood was characterized by conflicting accounts. He claimed to have seventeen (17) other siblings. However, this was unproven: her father was known to have a strange tendency to put a gun to his head when he was drunk. She was also reported to have been sexually abused at the orphanage where she was staying.

She got married at the age of seventeen (17) and gave birth to two (2) children. The marriage was short-lived; as the husband died of a heart attack after two (2) years. She gave up her two children for adoption. He was later caught for forging checks in Riverside, but was paroled six (6) months later.

The stormy years

Shortly after being released on parole, she got pregnant by a man she barely knew. She gave the baby up for adoption again. In 1952, she married a second time to a Swiss named Johanson. The marriage lasted more than a decade and was marked by turmoil and marital strife. She divorced Johanson in the mid-60s and married Roberto Puente, who was nineteen (19) years her junior. Her marriage lasted only two years as Roberto was often seen messing around with other women.

Dorothea Puente’s passion for running a boarding house began in the early 1960s, when she was still married to Johanson. However, that same year he was indicted for running a brothel and sentenced to ninety (90) days in the Sacramento County Jail. Her turbulent period came to a halt when she found work as a nurse; and later as the manager of a boarding house.

Before the split of her marriage to Roberto, she managed to take over a three (3) story, sixteen (16) bedroom house in Sacramento, California. He transformed this into a home for the poor, unwanted and homeless. Even so, he was charged with cashing his tenant’s Social Security checks. And this penchant for government control eventually led to his reign of terror!

The Creepy Years of Horror

The bizarre stories began when the neighbors discovered the “strange” activities of a man named Boss, who was said to be Dorothea’s handyman. The boss was an alcoholic man and was often seen digging up lumps of dirt and carrying it from the basement of the house. The basement floor was then covered with concrete. After all this was done, the boss mysteriously disappeared. There was no trace; and they didn’t even hear anything about it!

Dorothea married for the third time in 1976 to another violent man, Pedro Montalvo. This third husband was another alcoholic; which contributed to the collapse of their marriage after three (3) months. Dorothea was then seen in pubs and bars luring elderly men who received pensions or benefits. He took their checks, forged their signatures, and cashed the checks himself. He was eventually apprehended and charged with multiple counts of fraud. He was released on bail, but put his illegal activities on probation.

Paper trails of murders and illegal activities

Authorities said the killing spree began with the death of 61-year-old Ruth Munroe, who reportedly died of a drug overdose. He had about $6,000 when he moved in with Dorothea. Two weeks later, she died of an overdose of Tylenol and codeine in what doctors said was a clear case of suicide. A month after the incident, Dorothea was charged and convicted of drugging and robbing other elderly people. Dorothea was sentenced to five (5) years in prison, but was released after three (3) years. The conditions of his release required him not to have contact with the elderly, nor to cash any government checks issued to others.

Dorothea’s pen pal while still in prison, Everson Gilmouth, a 77-year-old Oregon man, came in handy when he was later released from prison. Everson was there to pick him up in his red truck. However, his body was later found dumped in the Sacramento River approximately five (5) years later. His truck was given to a handyman hired by Dorothea to build a 6 x 3 x 2 box, supposedly for storing books and other household items. The box was then nailed down; and the handyman then helped Dorothea carry the box to a nearby warehouse. However, he threw the box on the river bank on the way to the storage warehouse.

A year later, the box was found by two (2) fishermen. The police were informed about the decomposing body found in the box. Meanwhile, Dorothea collected the Gilmouth pension checks and wrote to family members that she was ill and could not write the letters herself.

He continued to run a boarding house and lodging for the homeless and alcoholics. He cashed their checks and gave them some money, which they always spent on booze at a nearby pub. He then reported it to the police and they were arrested. Dorothea then pocketed the rest of their money for her own use.

On November 11, 1988, the police managed to get bodies buried on the then 60-year-old Dorothea’s lawn. During further investigation, several bodies were found buried in the basement. The woman was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He died of natural causes in prison a few years later.
