Pocket Survival Kits Build Children’s Responsibility
I absolutely believe that children should know the ins and outs of survival when catastrophic situations go from bad to worse. In light of this, I tried to teach my children as much as possible. One important thing I try to emphasize is to be prepared. For me, special bug-out bags and survival kits are of great value in teaching children the responsibilities of survival.
A children’s set does not necessarily have to be huge or creepy when carried, but it should give the child a sense of accomplishment when collecting the objects.
To achieve this goal, I created a Pocket Survival Kit for children. This supply list is very similar to the supplies found in many Altoids type sets. I wanted the kit to be practical but small enough for an 8-10 year old to handle comfortably. The very first question was what to include in the kit and what to leave out.
Traditionally, these mini-kits contain only the bare essentials for outdoor survival, and the supplies included are the types that one finds simply impossible to make in the wild, but absolutely necessary. This kit can be carried at all times and usually complements the child’s other survival needs found in larger BOBs. This little kit can prove to be useful for him if he were to go out into the forest or somewhere alone, and it often happens that it makes the difference between life and death.
This kit is meant to be in your possession at all times while you are out in the wild or in a bug situation. Suitable for all climates and environments.
To start your survival kit, you will need the following items:
Bottle or other plastic beverage container
A small, five-function knife
Small cotton balls covered in Vaseline and neatly packed in a small bag.
A compass with a button
A variety of self-adhesive dressings for small cuts.
A properly wrapped Razar blade for crafting fire sticks or skinning creatures for food.
A small tube of antibiotic ointment to prevent infection from cuts
A whistle that can be used to signal help. It usually recognizes 3 beeps as an emergency signal.
Waterproof matches
Safety pins to hold torn clothing together
Small LED flashlight
Plastic film that allows water to collect
Small aluminum foil sheets that can be used for signage or for cooking food
Tea bags to make boiled water more palatable
Other items to consider:
A packet of instant soup mix.
“One a day” vitamin
Salt packets
Water purification tablets
A small piece of flint
A small roll of surgical tape
Several packs of Tylenol or Advil
Multiple hooks and lengths of 20 pound leader
Step-by-step instructions
- Wash the plastic container thoroughly with soap and water.
- Place the selected items in the plastic container.
- Any extra space can hold various items you want to carry.
- Wire is usually placed around the tin or container to help keep everything inside and let you know that the suspected items are indeed there. If the wire is missing, the contents should be suspected. Check them and replace the wire.
- Always place larger objects on the bottom and smaller objects on top.
- Place a piece of tape around the edge of the lid to seal it properly.
- Glue a small mirror to the bottom of the plastic container for a signal search of airplanes.
Emphasize to your child that when he is out alone in the wild, he should always carry this kit with him and above all, never put him down. Make sure they understand the dangers of using razor blades and hooks, as they can easily be cut or punctured.
You take the time to train your child to stay safe and give them the tools and responsibility that come with training.
