What Drug Rehab Program Will Work?
Today, it appears that more people are abusing prescription drugs than illicit drugs. As parents, we are told by national advertisements to hide our medications and keep them away from our children. Countless news articles mention school shootings and the connection between violence and these drugs. These are the drugs that pharmacies keep in sealed boxes and tell us to keep out of our children’s reach, and which are said to cause a laundry list of side effects, including anxiety, violence, seizures, and even suicidal thoughts and tendencies.
Unfortunately, I ran into a similar problem when I was looking for a good drug treatment program for my brother. He was a heroin user, and we sent him to every drug rehab program to sit with him for a few minutes, and then he prescribed one or two or three.
Drug and alcohol addicts, especially opiate addicts, experience extremely uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, so continued use is highly necessary. Thus, after withdrawal, the addict will do everything he can to get more of the substance he abuses – he will become much more immoral due to the high need for the foreign substance. The addict’s actions on this basis may be criminal, violent or illegal. But remove drugs from the picture (and therefore withdrawals) and you remove the need for use, and thus the need for such immoral behavior. The American system has so entangled mental health with drug and alcohol abuse reform that these behaviors—which are clearly related to drug use and mostly illegal—are now classified as “mental illnesses.” But if you remove the drug from the picture, the individual will not have such criminal or crazy tendencies.
Behind the drugs and alcohol, there was a reason why my brother started his drug addiction journey. We wanted you to discover this for yourself, rather than receive a Band-Aid or a quick fix. It made no sense to me that more medication would solve the problem. I have seen people become zombies from these drugs and become completely addicted to them, physically unable to quit without experiencing worse symptoms than street drugs.
So what can I recommend to other parents, sisters, brothers, children or friends whose loved ones are abusing drugs? Sure, you can try the “dual diagnosis” route. But you will end up with the same problem, unresolved, and a new type of drug addiction. My brother was never mentally ill. He was addicted to drugs and drugs changed who he was and how he behaved. It made him look mentally ill. It may look like a paranoid schizophrenic, but that’s because of the methane. It is a mental and physical reaction and is a symptom of WITHDRAWAL. It’s not a mental illness.
The best program I found that kept my brother clean and sober for 8 years now focused on individualized, inpatient and long-term treatment. No drugs. Just vitamins and minerals, exercise and homeopathic remedies. The program allowed him to sweat out the drugs (which act like poison in his body) and start over. He is no longer on crutches. It depends on your own innate abilities. Physically clean and mentally clean.
There is an old school that teaches that it contains everything a person needs to survive. We live in a “now society” today. Do you have chronic migraines? Take a Tylenol. Do you want to lose weight? Try the newest diet pill. Do you abuse drugs and alcohol? Replace your addictions with a comfortable tablet. The best advice I can give anyone looking for the right drug rehab program is to find one that supports getting to the root of the problem. Even a drug addict has all the happiness he could ever find.
