Benefits Of Moderate Alcohol Consumption – Baby Boomers Want To Know!

The holiday season offers more office and neighborhood parties, family gatherings and community events than any other time of the year. If you’re one of the many Boomers living in the party center, you’ve probably asked the question, “Is drinking harmful or beneficial, and how much is good/bad for me?” How many times have we heard that the French eat a lot of fatty foods but have a much lower risk of heart disease than us Americans because of the antioxidant effects of red wine? Well, the bad news for us Boomers who imbibe it is that it might not be the wine!

Here are the results of my research on the subject:

The Mayo Clinic cautions that moderate alcohol consumption may only be most beneficial if you are an older adult male or if you have risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol. If you’re a middle-aged or younger adult, some evidence suggests that even moderate alcohol consumption may do more harm than good. In fact, if you are a woman and drink alcohol, studies have shown that you have a higher risk of breast cancer associated with alcohol consumption. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic recommend taking other steps to get cardiovascular benefits, such as eating a healthy diet, lots of fruits that contain antioxidants, and getting regular exercise. Good Docs Mercola and Weill also agree with Mayo. Both say that drinking large amounts of alcohol raises insulin levels, which is bad news for the body. And our favorite TV doctor, Oz, claims that youth comes in a bottle filled with olive oil, not wine!

Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, an internist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, was the lead author of a New England Journal of Medicine study that examined the role of drinking habits and heart disease. After 12 years of follow-up, they found that men who drank alcohol between three and seven days a week, considered moderate drinkers, had fewer heart attacks than those who drank once a week. The study also found that even heavy alcohol consumption does not increase the risk of heart disease. More studies are needed, but these results suggest that the benefit has nothing to do with alcohol consumption, but rather is attracted by social activities.

I have found that because of the many different study results, it is difficult to compile a single body of evidence about the benefits or risks of moderate alcohol consumption. The potential risks and benefits vary greatly depending on a person’s health history, age, gender, and family history.

There was a study that discovered a serious risk that I have to share with you, and it’s not related to the benefits or risks of drinking alcohol, but to mixing alcohol with Tylenol. According to recent research from the University of Southern California, alcohol is broken down by the liver into harmless components. However, while the liver is busy with alcohol, it is susceptible to serious damage from acetaminophen. People who drink a lot – “heavy” three mixed drinks, a six-pack of beer or a liter of wine on an almost daily basis – should skip the Tylenol (or generic acetaminophen) pill! I was surprised to find that the FDA currently recommends that anyone who consumes more than three alcoholic beverages per day no take acetaminophen or other over-the-counter pain relievers.

So it looks like us Baby Boomers will have to stick to a glass of wine (or less) with dinner every now and then. My brother Joe’s favorite saying is “everything in moderation!” and I think you are right on this subject.

Good health,

Kathi
