Travel to Bhutan

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to Bhutan? My husband and I left in 2008 with our son, who was then two years old. Bhutan is a small country between Nepal and China. When we left, an extended highway was being completed to connect Bhutan’s two major cities, Thimphu and Paro, making travel between the two easier and safer.

Paro is the smaller of the two cities and is where you fly to Bhutan. It has a quaint village feel, with a small main street full of shops and hotels. The flight from Kathmandu to Paro is amazing with the most incredible views of the Himalayan mountains. Even the airport is architecturally beautiful, operated by the commercial airline Druk Air. Paro Airport is one of the 10 most extreme airports in the world, known for its dramatic valley drop and short runway. The flight is actually very smooth, you go around and land on the airport runway pretty quickly, but I never felt nervous to be honest. It’s like landing in a fairytale valley – breathtaking views and ancient dwellings on the hillsides.

We were visiting family so we stayed at our family’s resort which was beautiful with landscaping and traditional Bhutanese architecture. We spent a few days in a cottage directly across the hills from the famous Taktsang Monastery. You can see the monastery up in the mountains, it looks so majestic and far away, most of the time the clouds are dancing around it. There is a day tour that you can visit, half of the tour is on horseback and the other half is on foot. We went with our toddler and it was worth it.

We spent a lot of time in Thimphu, which is about an hour’s drive from Paro. Thimphu has roughly 80,000 people, not including the surrounding areas. It reminded me of Vail, Colorado, like a small mountain town, protected by high peaks. We went in May and the weather was perfect; crisp at night, sunny during the day, occasional showers that didn’t last long – much like Colorado in May.

As a mother traveling with a small child, my first concern was where can I get the things my child needs? Fortunately, they have grocery stores like ours, some with different names, but disposable diapers are available. The only things I highly recommend bringing from home are Children’s Tylenol and bug repellant. In Bhutan, these are easily available in adult form, not so much in children’s portions. There were no bugs where we stayed, but there are warmer parts of Bhutan, and if you’re venturing into a place like this, you’ll want some bug protection. They have canned milk, which is safe, formula and baby food.

Thimphu town has a main street full of interesting shops and vendors of all kinds. There are restaurants, bars and even several hotels in the city center. It’s a warm and friendly city where the locals are used to being tourists and help whenever they can. You will immediately notice the children dressed in their school uniforms, or the Bhutanese dress code, as they gather en masse in the main square after school or on weekends. Thimphu has a major Dzong (fort) called Tashichoed Dzong, built in the early 1200s.

I was able to visit some of the historical areas of Thimphu, an ancient medical school/library, retired caves, and the main Dzong in Thimphu. They were all magical places filled with so much energy it was like stepping back in time. I’m a nurse, so I wanted to check out the hospital in Thimphu and see how they do things. The main hospital was a bit crowded, but clean and relatively organized. My greatest curiosity was the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). The nurses were very nice and let me sneak into their ward quickly. Very small, but its brand new equipment (medical supplies, incubators) was sparkling clean and took wonderful care of premature babies, I was very impressed.

We also did a 4-day tour of central Bhutan. A tour guide will take you in a minibus to various towns, stopping at picturesque accommodations along the way. The architecture is amazing, the gardens are like nothing you’ve ever seen before – bright colorful flowers and huge old trees. From the small farmhouses to the large Dzongs that dot the hillsides and valleys, the whole thing was a sight to behold, surrounded by hundreds of giant rhododendron trees that look like they have been there since time immemorial. The wildlife I saw was also fascinating – colorful birds, grey-faced Langur monkeys and yaks. South central Bhutan is warm and hot with a different kind of jungle foliage that I have never seen before, beautiful purple flowered trees and lush grassy hills. Punakha Dzong was spectacular, walking around it felt like you had stepped into some kind of time portal.

The people we met on our travels were very friendly and engaging, and we returned home with wonderful stories and warm memories. People often ask me if I would live there, but then I’m a big fan of small towns. Bhutan is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to, I hope you get the chance to visit, it’s really an amazing adventure.
