How to Care for Silk

There is no doubt that silk is synonymous with elegance and luxury. This beautiful, natural material is versatile and is often finished with a glossy satin finish or matte silk crepe.

The earliest appearance of woven silk as a luxury fabric is believed to date back more than 5,000 years in China. Silk was originally reserved for royalties in China, but gradually spread throughout Chinese culture and trade in both social and geographic terms. Silk production was largely limited to China until the opening of the Silk Road around 200 BC. This route facilitated the growth of the silk trade and silk production became more widespread in the west. The Industrial Revolution changed much of Europe’s silk industry. The new technology of spinning cotton made it much cheaper than producing silk, so the more expensive production of silk became less common and became a very luxurious material.

Today, silk is still the luxury fabric because it is versatile, comfortable and elegant. We don’t just use pure silk, silk can be woven with other fibers such as cotton and cashmere to create fabrics that have an elegant sheen and a luxurious, silky texture that glides on the skin.

CARE OF YOUR SILK HAIR

Although silk is relatively durable, it is a delicate fiber and requires some care and attention when cleaning. However, with proper cleaning, drying and pressing, your silk clothes will retain their original softness and shine for years, so it is definitely worth devoting this little time to your silk pieces.

The care instructions for many silk garments, especially pure silk garments, recommend dry cleaning, but many silk garments look better and last longer if hand washed. However you choose to clean your silk, we recommend that you read the garment’s care instructions before making a decision. If you want to wash silk clothes by hand, here’s a handy guide that we hope you find helpful.

HAND WASHING SILK:

1. Prepare a basin of cold water and mix with a mild detergent such as Woolite TM, natural soap or shampoo.

2. Place the silk garment in the cold water and gently dip it up and down. Avoid soaking the silk for too long as this can fade the dye.

3. Drain the water from the basin, fill it with cold water, then rinse the clothes several times with cold water.

4. Never dry or wring out silk clothes, instead wrap them in a bath towel and gently squeeze out excess water.

5. When most of the water is gone, place the silk on a padded hanger to dry completely. Or you can lay it on a towel to dry naturally.

HOW TO PRESS:

1. Turn the garment over and press while still wet.

2. Make sure the iron is on a low setting and turn off the steam function, as the high temperature of the steam can damage the silk fibers.

3. It is recommended to turn the garment inside out and place a piece of fabric on the silk garment before pressing, so that there is no direct contact between the silk garment and the heat.
