Getting Rid of Cabbage Moth

You will do your best to achieve healthy growth and your plants will be “tricked” by some creature. What are you doing?

As more and more of us worry about climate change caused by chemicals and the like, we are turning to old ways of defense. In general, this is a natural defense against all the insects that help themselves to our crops.

Cabbage month:

This month, she lays her eggs on cabbage leaves, and the result are caterpillars. This results in rapid loss of leaves from the crop.

The best and surest way to do this is to take a bucket of hot water and walk around the plants daily, picking off the caterpillars and dropping them into the bucket. This takes time and is inconvenient.

A better method is to trap the month before the eggs are laid. You can do this by placing a small board (ideally sized beer coaster) around the growing area, spread some molasses on it and you’ll be good for a few months.

If you have a large patch of rhubarb, make a strong tea from the discarded leaves, let it cool, and pour the fruit over it, soaking them well. The idea is that the released odor will confuse the moth and make it go elsewhere. This should be done every four to five days, more often in case of rain.

I tried it and it works, the only problem is that you need a big patch of rhubarb.

This is what cabbage moths fear because it kills them. This is called fire spray. It works really well on most insects and plants.

Here’s how to make it:

4 garlic cloves

6 large hot chili peppers or 3 tablespoons of hot chili.

4 drops of liquid detergent

1 large spoon full of vegetable oil

35 fluid ounces of water (7 US cups)

Put it all in a blender and strain it through a coffee filter or something similar.

Store in a labeled jar in the refrigerator.

If your blender is not big enough to handle the water; add as much water as you can and add the rest after blending.

Put the mixture in a garden sprayer and make a small trail with it first to see how it will affect your plants.

Spray it on both sides of the leaves, and for anything you’re not sure about, spray it on the soil around the plant.

I blow them into rat holes and find that they soon move away and build houses elsewhere.

This recipe was given to me by my neighbor on my property; comes with a warning.

Always wear gloves and eye protection. Wash hands after use.

Spray the crop every three to six days, or more often if it rains.

When the cabbage moths are gone, I switch to a much lighter deterrent.

I use a natural liquid soap like Aloe Vera or similar. I put 4 ml in two and a half liters of water and spray my crops on both sides of the leaves once a week.

I think this keeps most pests away. If the cabbage moth accumulates, immediately apply another dose of fire spray.
