Feeding Koi Properly – Depends on the Season

The key to feeding your koi properly is that the way you feed your koi depends on the season. Actually, more precisely, it depends on the temperature of the water.

If koi are kept in heated ponds, they can feed regularly throughout the year. Koi kept in heated ponds do not have to adjust to changes in water temperature.

Proper feeding of koi during the summer months will stimulate growth, aid in tissue maintenance and repair, aid in fat deposits, and provide nutrients that the fish can store for use in the winter months.

When the water temperature is between 64-68 degrees Fahrenheit (18-20 degrees Celsius), your koi’s feeding program should include a high protein diet to promote growth. In contrast, feeding koi at cooler temperatures contains less protein because it is more difficult to digest. Instead, it is excreted into the water, which not only makes feeding more protein at cooler temperatures a poor nutritional plan, but also pollutes the lake water.

You need to evaluate what you are feeding your koi during the cooler fall and spring months when the koi’s appetite is subdued. During this time, when feeding the koi, it is necessary to switch from a high-protein feed to a diet based on wheat germ, which is easier to digest at cooler temperatures.

Feeding koi should be stopped completely at temperatures below 46-50 degrees Fahrenheit. At these water temperatures, koi do not feed at all and rely on already stored nutrients to survive the winter.

When the weather warms up again and the fish start foraging, you can start them back on the wheat germ diet. Then gradually start mixing in the higher protein summer feed as the water warms.

The amount you feed your Koi depends on their age and body temperature. Feeding koi fry is different from feeding adult koi. When the water temperature is around 68 degrees Fahrenheit, koi up to 1 year of age eat 5-10% of their body weight, koi between 1 and 3 years of age eat 5% of their daily body weight, while adult koi (3 years and older) are consumed. 2% of their body weight per day.

A good rule of thumb when feeding is to offer as much food as they will eat within 2-3 minutes of each feeding. When you feed your koi, you will notice a large burst of activity at the beginning of each meal, and then as they start to get full, they will eat more slowly. This is the point at which you should stop feeding.

As for frequency of feeding, keep in mind that at temperatures around 68 Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), plan for 2-3 times a day. In colder temperatures (50-59 Fahrenheit or 10-15 degrees Celsius), they only need to be fed once a day.

As you can see, it is extremely important to consider the seasons and temperatures when feeding your koi!
