Why A Green Plastic Watering Can Makes Sense

If you’re a gardener like me, you’ve probably used watering cans over the years. I’ve always used metal watering cans, I loved the sound they made when you put them down on the path, but the problem was that they rusted after a few months, especially quickly after adding corrosive nitrogen fertilizer to the water. I took care of my plants and vegetables. So I switched to a green plastic watering can instead.

The advantages of the green plastic watering can over metal are obvious. They don’t weigh that much, and no matter what chemicals you put in them, the plastic remains intact. Old metal cans dent easily, there is no chance of that with a green plastic watering can. One of my big problems with the metal box was removing the rose. Once the tiny holes become clogged with leaves, rust, or other matter, they are impossible to remove without a mole-catch, and squeezing too hard to remove the rose can distort the spout, so the rose will never come back!

A quick rinse under the outside faucet and I can easily remove the rose for cleaning at any time without having to call my husband or search the garage for grips. They are very easy to keep clean and will never rust or dent.

Even though I have a large garden and hundreds of trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers, I find myself using my green plastic watering can almost every day. Much easier than rolling up a big old hose pipe and hauling it to a remote spot where a small plant might need some TLC.

However, I have one serious gripe with all garden tools, no matter what size they are – from my little pruning shears to my big garden forks and spades – why are they always green, black or brown? When you’re working in a large garden, it’s very easy to put a tool down and do something else and forget where you left it. Surely it would be easier to find them if a company offered fluorescent orange devices? I don’t even know how many times I’ve found some garden equipment months after use, in a rusty and rotten state!

But I don’t have that problem anymore, I painted the handles with bright pink fluorescent paint and wrapped a yellow Caution tape around my green plastic watering can. Now I can find anything in a few minutes. So if any gardening equipment companies are reading this, maybe they can send me a few bucks for my great idea! Maybe you could start making some neon pink plastic jugs instead of the green plastic watering can now please?

My neighbor always borrowed tools but never returned them, but now I can point to my painted hoe and say it’s mine, I need it back. I draw the line at lending the green plastic watering can, I use it every day and will never let it out of my sight!
