Crock Pot – Old Fashioned Beef Stew Recipe
In the fall and winter months, I enjoy making hearty soups and stews in my crock pot for my family. I love that I can spend a few minutes making it in the morning, pop it in the slow cooker and go…a few hours later our dinner is hot and ready to eat.
The recipe below was given to me by my 83-year-old aunt about 25 years ago. To this day, I enjoy making it for my family. If you don’t like okra, you can definitely leave it out of the recipe. I occasionally substituted fresh green beans or green peas for the okra and the stew was just as delicious.
Old-fashioned beef stew recipe
2 pounds. beef cubes
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 bay leaf
1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 onion, finely chopped
1 cup of beef broth
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 teaspoons of table salt
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
4 carrots, peeled and cut into 1″ slices
1 cup celery, chopped
4 potatoes, peeled and diced
4 medium-sized turnips, peeled and quartered
4 1/2 cups water
1 cup partially cooked okra
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown beef cubes on all sides.
In your pot, mix the browned beef cubes, bay leaves, Worcestershire sauce, onion, stock, pepper, salt, granulated sugar and the vegetables listed in the recipe. Add 4 1/2 cups of water and stir to combine.
Cover and set the pot to high and slow cook for 6 hours. Remove the lid and, if necessary, stir in flour to thicken the soup. Replace the lid, turn the dial to low heat and simmer for another 1-2 hours.
This recipe makes 6 hearty servings.
