One of the biggest mistakes I see people make in the gym (or rather after the gym) is not allowing themselves adequate recovery. Proper recovery allows muscles to grow, improper recovery does not. What’s the point of going to the gym and working hard if you’re not going to do what it takes to grow muscle? What many people don’t realize is that muscles don’t actually grow in the gym, they do later.

Recovery isn’t just about giving your muscles enough time to stop hurting. It’s much more complex than that. In this article, I will review some of the most important concepts of muscle recovery.

The most important thing in my opinion? Adequate sleep. Your muscles can only grow and repair while you sleep. If you’re not getting 8 hours a night, you’re selling yourself short compared to the potential gains from your hard work in the gym. Change your schedule, do whatever you need to do to get 8 hours of sleep a day.

The second most important thing that promotes a good recovery? Drink lots of water, and I mean lots. The old saying of 8 glasses a day is outdated and has no scientific support. According to the latest research, ideally, men should drink 3.7 liters and women 2.7 liters of water per day. Water is to your body what oil is to your car. Everything works better if you are properly hydrated, don’t sell yourself too much.

My final suggestion? Eat and eat a lot. Especially in the 1 hour after training. Without food, the body has nothing to build muscles from. Proteins and carbohydrates are especially necessary for the muscles in the first hour after training. If you religiously eat foods that contain both of these qualities after each workout, you can be sure that you are providing your body with the fuel it needs to build lean muscle mass. Sometimes eating real food isn’t practical or convenient. The solution? Accessories. They provide the body with the nutrients it needs, while being quick and easy to consume. Just make sure you take the right ones.
