What Does it Cost to Plant 1 Acre of Vines
A common question for all wineries is how much it costs to plant a hectare of grapes. The list below shows approximate prices for one hectare of grapes. These are 15 rows, 90 m long, 3 m apart, and one vine every 2 m. All prices are approximate, but you get the idea. I also included when each activity should be done throughout the year. This example assumes that we will plant the vines this spring, so we started work on this block last year. And this is in Australia, so in the Northern Hemisphere just add 6 months to the time given.
Please note that these prices are APPROXIMATE and will vary greatly depending on where you are in the world.
Ordering and payment of vines, phylloxera-resistant grafted vines .. $2363 .. November
Soil test to determine what is missing from the soil .. $250 .. December
Spreading lime, gypsum and other soil requirements .. In Australia it would be rare not to need lime and gypsum as we usually have very old acid soils and vines need a neutral soil pH .. $800 .. January
Plan and record the layout of the vineyard, best done with the help of a surveyor. $1350 .. January
Rip up the ground deeply for root penetration and drainage, you need a BIG machine to do this and rip to a depth of at least 500mm .. $600 .. February
Plant cover crops to increase soil organic matter and nitrogen .. $150 .. May
Turn the cover plant over to incorporate organic matter .. $90 .. September
Using a power harrow to plow the land into a flat area and sow a permanent grass lawn (grass in the vineyard alleys) so that the soil does not blow away and you can work in the vineyard in wet weather .. $ 195 .. September
Buy treated pine posts for end box assemblies, about 175mm diameter posts are needed as the fully loaded grid will put a significant tensile force on the end assemblies .. $2400 .. September
Buy steel posts for each row, you need one every 6 meters – the steel posts bend in the ground and the harvester can sort around them, the pine posts in the middle of the row do not bend and the harvester “leaves” the vines 300 mm either side of the post, or breaks the column .. $1260 .. September
Buy wire per row, 1 watering wire, 1 fruit wire and 4 foliage wires, the foliage wires can be added later but it’s easier to do everything at once .. $695 .. September
Buy vine guards, they act as a warm house around each vine, protecting against rabbits, wind and chemical spraying .. $1013 .. September
Buy irrigation pipe, drippers, connectors and assume we are connecting to an existing irrigation system so this price does not include pumps or filters .. $1200 .. September
Contractor driving treated pine and steel posts into the ground .. $1200 .. October
Contractor to build end fittings .. $400 .. October
Install wires and tighten as needed .. $450 .. October
Installation of irrigation lines, drippers and connection to existing irrigation system .. $450 .. October
Weed spraying in the vine row to keep the green grass in the alley and plant the new vines in bare ground so there is no competition with weeds for nutrients and water .. $210 .. October
Plant vines .. this is backbreaking work, each vine must be dug in and watered as you go .. $300 .. November
Tie the vines to the fruit wire .. we want the vines to reach the fruit wire as quickly as possible so they can start producing fruit and we want nice straight trunks on the vines so we can easily get around them .. $300. November
Put up the vine guards .. $ 300 .. November Trimming the vine rows, a regular task from spring to fall, required on average every two weeks .. $ 90 .. November
Buy and spread fertilizer .. organic fertilizer to boost vines, apply about one ton per hectare .. $830 .. November
Weed spraying in grape rows, a regular task that can be helped by mulching under the vines, without the weed spray the young vines compete with the weeds for nutrients and water .. $210 .. December
Cut the rows of vines, ideally with a side mower so that the clippings provide mulch under the vines .. $90 .. December
Heartless vines .. the vines try to grow shoots from every bud on the trunk, you have to open the vine protector, pop those suckers off and pinch the vine protector back and do this regularly during the growing season .. $300 .. December
First year total for one acre .. $17,495
