A Guide To Dessert And A Movie – "The Aviator" and His Flying Duck Cream Puffs

Need a new theme for a movie night? Whether it’s two nights or a night full of friends, we’ve got you covered. Tonight’s movie is “The Aviator” starring Leonardo DiCaprio as madcap pilot Howard Hughes and this is your guide.

There’s no better way to kick off a party than with the sophistication and glitz of an old Hollywood bash. As you may or may not know, Howard Hughes didn’t just fly, he was a movie director back in the day and dated many stars (like Kate Hepburn and Ava Gardner). So throw a party that would make even Jack Warner proud. Ask everyone to come dressed as their favorite Hollywood royalty. You can even send fun, old-fashioned invitations if you don’t mind a little extra expense. A big band CD is a must. Nothing sets the mood of this movie better than that.

Since this is a sophisticated yet fun party, you’ll need lots of pink and sparkling champagne. Shirley Temples are a great idea for non-alcoholic drinkers. All you have to do is get lots of cherry 7-Ups. It will do the trick. Just make sure to put maraschino cherries in the glasses.

Tonight’s dessert will be the delightfully glamorous yet fun duck cream puffs. It’s a cute little dessert that goes with the flying element of the image and still brings you old Hollywood. While it may seem daunting to make, it really isn’t. What’s more, you can even make these babies ahead of time and refrigerate until ready to serve. Here is the recipe:

“The Aviator’s Duck Cream Puffs”*

Ingredients: 1/8 jar strawberry jam, 4 eggs, ½ cup butter, 6.8 oz instant sugar-free vanilla pudding, 1 cup water, ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 3 and ½ cups milk and confectioners’ sugar.

1) Boil butter, water and salt in a pan over medium heat. Add the flour and mix until you get a smooth ball. Then take it off the heat and let it stand for about 5 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time. Beat well until smooth and shiny.

2) Cut a little sandpaper in the corner of a Ziploc storage bag. Fill the bag with batter in a greased 15 x 17 pan. Make 3 dozen 1 inch long hook shapes and make a small scoop at the end for each duck head. Bake at 400 degrees for about 8 minutes (they are golden brown). Place on a wire rack to cool.

3) Drop 36 tablespoons of dough onto another greased baking sheet. Shape the dough into teardrops. Bake at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes (they should be golden brown again). Remove to wire racks.

4) Mix the milk with the pudding mix in a medium bowl for just 1 minute. Place the bowl covered with plastic film in the refrigerator for at least an hour.

5) Cut off the top 1/3 of each puff. Remove any soft dough. Place the filling on the bottom of the inflated cake. We put strawberry jam on top. Cut the top in half lengthwise to make wings. Place the wings in the filling. Place necks in the filling. Sprinkle with sifted confectioners’ sugar.

6) Enjoy it with accumulated glamor and sophistication.

Now it’s time to serve the little ducks and sit down to enjoy the motion picture. So pop in that DVD labeled “The Aviator” and let’s get started. I know Leonardo Dicaprio is in this picture, but hey, trust me. This movie has something for everyone to enjoy: costumes, beautiful colors, excellent actors, tragic drama and lots of excitement. What more is there to ask for? I have collected ten things that you should pay attention to when watching this movie:

Probable Side Break1) Leonardo’s Butt – He didn’t see it coming, even after I told him to watch out for it. Tick, Tick. Well, there it is in all its glory (surrounded by pee). Really attractive.

2) Really Scary Plane Crash – Scary….and not just the kids to turn away in fear, but all of us to turn our heads in fear. Something cool though… hey mom, look at all the blood.

3) Blinding paparazzi bulbs – Yes, it hurts when the bulbs are flashing. I would watch it, but I don’t want to miss a single part.

4) Kate Hepburn- Okay, we all know Cate Blanchett can play a dog and make it look real. Even though she’s not playing a dog, we think she’s Kate through and through (though she hardly looks like her).

5) The horribly dirty janitor guy – even I get obsessive compulsive just looking at the guy. I mean, have you seen her nails? Ick.

6) The Fantastically Huge Court Trial – Every good movie has a standout speech that makes you cry, cheer, and root for the crazy guy. Need I say more? That’s another point for the little guy!

7) Gwen Stefani Two Lines – Listen to the two lines and don’t be surprised. As long as it looks the part, I’m glad they stuck with the two lines.

8) Crazy Big Band Singer – I’m in awe of this guy’s massive energy. It should have been an award winning performance. He makes you laugh so hard you can’t see straight. It’s weirdly so funny it’s true.

9) Clothes Burning Bonfire – This is the craziest bonfire scene I’ve ever seen. The music is crazy, but it still makes me want to join Hughes and burn all the clothes. Until you realize that you are standing in front of a room naked, without clothes. This is awkward!

10) When you tell your date not to eat too much ice cream – it makes you swoon. The title of this should also give you the chills. How old is that girl? It’s really weird and I don’t want to know.

Well, with these tips, your movie night will be the talk of the town. By next year, everyone will be talking about ducks and crazy people. A job well done!
