Health Alert: Fast Food Wraps and Salad Have Sickened Hundreds

Since May 1, 2018, more than 400 people have become ill after eating foods containing salad, foil and other fresh (cooked) vegetables in restaurants of various fast food chains. Others have recently become ill after eating pre-made salads or using bagged vegetables as salad ingredients. home from grocery chains. Some people like to lick the spoon after mixing homemade or prepackaged cookie or cookie dough, and the (already mentioned) flour or eggs (salmonella) in the mix also make them sick. Why have things like fresh vegetables and flour suddenly become potential health hazards?

No one will like the answer, but it’s the truth. I have been writing about this for over twenty years. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, many people began to become seriously ill and some died after eating fresh vegetables or prepared foods containing them, such as salads, tacos, wraps, and more. Others got sick from raw pasta and some fruits. Please note that this was not just your average food poisoning caused by stale or undercooked food. These cases involved potential killers such as campylobacter, e coli and listeria. Why are there so many cases and how did they end up in our food?

You might think it’s because home cooks and restaurant workers don’t wash fresh vegetables before using them in salads, sandwiches, or wraps. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the problem. Dirt and external contaminants such as pesticides can be washed off the vegetables. Washing does nothing for vegetables infected with campylobacter, e coli and listeria. Today, more than ever before, there are more cases of vegetables being contaminated with these pollutants.

For many years, the same groups of migrant workers and their children picked produce grown in the United States. They tended to travel around the country because they had jobs most of the year. When there was no harvest to be had, they were given work in food processing plants. However, as fast food franchises and chain restaurants became extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s, growers grew larger and more people were needed to harvest and harvest the crops. This caused a huge influx of new faces from Mexico and South American countries.

The old joke (and even the movie title) says, “Don’t drink the water south of the border.” Why? Because the water supply in many of these poor countries is dangerously contaminated with all kinds of bacteria. This is because raw sewage is poured into available water to move it away from residential areas in places where there are no treatment facilities. This fact is evidenced by the regular pollution of the seawater at San Diego beaches, which is sometimes so contaminated with Mexican sewage that it is unsafe for swimming.

In many cases, the same fresh water heavily contaminated with sewage is used for drinking and washing clothes. Because it’s been going on for so long, people in these places have built up immunity to most contaminants. However, these remain in their bodies. Growers sometimes do not provide adequate portable restrooms for pickers or workers. The impurities in their bodies end up in the soil. Likewise, food processing plants that do not use hand washing or other food safety procedures face the same problem if their employees come into contact with food by touching or sweating.

Dangerous bacteria are absorbed into the plants through water absorbed from the soil. This type of dirt cannot be washed away; it’s in the food. The same is true if bacteria are inadvertently introduced into processed foods. Testing helps processing facilities, but it’s usually too late to catch all the contaminated food in time to keep everyone safe. Last year, one in six people in the US and Canada got sick from eating raw vegetables and some fresh fruit. Many more people became ill from undercooked or contaminated beef, chicken, pork or seafood. We do not have the immunity that pickers and food workers have in the fight against dangerous contamination. So what can be done?

There are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones from these dangers. First, identify problem foods that people tend to eat uncooked. These include lettuce, celery, cabbage, leafy greens, sprouts, cucumbers, jalapeno peppers, and other seed vegetables. It is recommended to microwave raw vegetables for 1-2 minutes at high power. Scientists disagree about the benefits of the microwave oven, but it has worked for me and my family for years.

Fruits, I can only recommend that you buy fruits and vegetables grown in the USA. Be especially careful when it comes to strawberries, cantaloupe and grapes. There are many ways to cook fruit and retain its flavor and health benefits. Then there’s always fruit tarts (yum). Cook meat and eggs thoroughly, and avoid unpasteurized milk and cheese. Beware of meat or seafood produced and processed in other countries. Recently, people have been sickened by shrimp grown in heavily contaminated breeding ponds outside the United States.
