How To Make The Best Advanced Homemade Carp Fishing Boilies!
There has been a shocking increase in the number of carp anglers asking why ready-made baits do not meet expectations in terms of the promised catch results! There are many reasons for this, but you can control them all! How can you achieve better than average results when so many anglers are using the same or similar lures as you? This is a big problem and a huge challenge to solve for most big carp anglers. Read on to find the answers and expert tips to get your power back in no time!
Years ago I reached a point of realization where it was obvious to me that it was pointless to fix an underperforming bait paradigm with baits and glues. Of course, I am referring to the bait dough, which is extruded, shaped and heated in one way or another into boilies, which is used as free bait or hook bait!
I’m usually short on time, so bait making for me was about getting things done faster than usual, rather than continuing with the old fashioned bait making methods I’d been using since the late seventies, which involved rolling and boiling the dough to make a boilie.
The fact that it took so long influenced my decision to eliminate completely pointless steps from the process. For example, I started to stop heating the bait and went back to using paste, the same way I did when I started carp fishing in the 70s, when there were no feed companies that sold boiled bait and when everyone made homemade bait.
The step of cooking the baits resulted in an immediate huge improvement in results. I started catching fish when other anglers around me couldn’t. I also caught a wider range of carp, from the syndicate water, which at that time was approx. I have been fishing for 8 years. I noticed that the fish behaved very differently to the unheated bait. The initial step was to move away from high-protein boilies to bird food and other bait topics, while milk protein costs rose and rose.
This inadvertently led to me using very coarse, soluble and open baits that break down easily in the water. I still made boilies and warming baits, which I fashioned from homemade feeding dough molds. But around 1992, I stopped using bait-rolling tables and hand-made my homemade baits three or four times the normal size of other anglers. (The normal size of boilers at that time was about 14 millimeters.)
I have made lures of 40 millimeters and larger. I also boiled and dried these baits; but this is where the similarity with normal home boilers and traditional readymade boilers ends. This is because I made boilies that couldn’t be rolled on a rolling table because they were so sticky or gross or both sticky and gross. I loved these lures and they really reduced my catches compared to the normal, which are now store type, traditional readymade boilies.
I didn’t have time for bait-rolling tables, and I really disliked the similarities between homemade baits made with rolling tables and ready-made machine-rolled baits; they were just massively too similar to give me the edges I knew I could use on my homemade lures if I made them as different as possible. This is how I got rid of my bait rolling tables, even the very small microboiler rolling tables I owned.
I no longer wanted lures that looked like ready-made lures. The reason for this is that I discovered with many years of experience that fish feed very selectively and individually, using highly developed defensive feeding behavior in the presence of boilies.
Home-made boilies and traditional store-bought boilies are very similar, and over the years, from the nineties to the 2000s, the amount used by more and more anglers for carp fishing has really shown me convincingly that making coiled home-made boilies is definitely not the way to maximize your results. .
I won’t go into how I started making my boilies differently here, but the important step happened in the early nineties, when instead of whole boilies, I fished with crumbled boilies all the time. At that time, I also started using PVA boilie threads in a circle, but with several cut baits. I have also used this method with my hook baits because I have noticed that it produces faster bites and significantly more fish. These things and other observations led me to avoid the step of rolling the bait altogether.
Recently, I have discovered very dramatically different paradigms in bait design that maximize and optimize baits without heating the bait in any way, and without making baits based on the old fashioned HNV and BNV food type walleye paradigms.
I have used these paradigms to design and build homemade lures for 25 years. But when I became a writer, I found myself constantly questioning every aspect of baiting, taking it back to its roots, and reexamining the logic, processes, and thought evolution that ultimately led to the mass conditioning of thousands of anglers. think, it’s the way to design, make and apply the bait!
Just because a lot of people think something, that doesn’t automatically mean that that thinking is correct, and more importantly, that it can’t be improved upon! Becoming an expert in homemade baits, testing and continuing to research original research, original testing, and breaking old rules and status quo thinking has revealed several very significant breakthroughs in improving my results.
Part of this happened was that in 2005 I became the go-to information hub for homemade bait anglers around the world and became a field tester and consultant for several bait companies. At some point in the last 10 years, I have found myself testing new lure versions in multiple forms and re-making them almost every day for months, and months for years. The feedback from the fish from this real life bait testing really opened my eyes to new possibilities that really beat the whole food bait paradigm.
Of course, few bait makers will be happy to read this, especially if they are closed-minded and stuck in the old-fashioned food bait thinking of years ago. Sometimes you need a push of inspiration to change. A few years ago I had quite an interesting conversation with John Holt, an angler who deserves huge respect for his catches. He started the Mainline bait with his Grange bait. I had many friends who fished the Little Grange in Essex and later in the early nineties I fished the Big Grange next to it.
Those were interesting times and a lot of guys at that time were selling leads as a part-time income. I saw Danny Fairbrass, the founder of Korda, walking around his mates at Little Grange. We were all strangers back then, although I might have bumped into Kevin Knight or Zenon Bojko from Mainline, or maybe fished with a guy who made lures at the nearby Nash factory, that was just part of the scene.
I remember discussing the baits with Zenon a few times on the way to Dream Lakes and I felt that the ideas I was coming up with were a little off the norm. John Holt approached me a few years ago at the Carp Show at Sandown Park when I was working on a stand as a consultant for CC Moore and explained the aspects and possibilities of some fluids.
This very involved, exceptional big fish angler (whose boilies recipe was the basis of Mainline baits) very enthusiastically grilled me about a lot of my ideas and concepts, which are discussed in my articles, etc. read and we talked for a long time.
