If you’ve walked through an electronics store or airport (I repeat myself), you’ve probably noticed that these places are colonized by iDevice accessories. A staggering selection of covers, cables, converters and headsets. There are many add-ons to complement your iPad VPN. I love music as much as the next guy, but you have to draw the line at (another) set of headphones that cost as much as the flight I’m about to take. Nevertheless, here are the accessories that are essential for me.

Telefunken XO iPad Pen – It’s not cheap, but after you get bored with the crayon-like efforts of other manufacturers, treat yourself to the iPad VPN pen that actually works. Thanks to Telefunken for regular app updates that provide functionality and performance.

AppleTV – OK, so it’s not an *iPad* accessory, but it’s a beautifully realized way to bring iPad content to an HDMI TV or projector. For some reason, the ubiquitous iPhone dock for stereos never seems to fit iPads, and I’ve never seen a 30-pin extension that would allow for the cheat. Solution, AppleTV and HDMI cable – quality tunes, movies or just funny cat videos in 50″ plasma glory.

Kanex ATV Pro – the eagle-eyed among you read the previous item and scoffed – Most office or meeting room projectors don’t have HDMI! AppleTV is just a home theater game! Well… not quite. The clever folks at Kanex have created the ATV Pro – an Apple-approved HDMI-VGA with 3.5mm audio output. And it’s powered via HDMI, so no ugly cables. Together, these two allow you to waltz into any meeting and look pretty dapper while presenting wirelessly from an iPad, even if the projector is older than you.

Many business people use their iPad VPN to listen to music on the go. Headphones – the headphones that come with the iPad are fine, but can greatly improve the long-term (over an hour) experience of listening to music on your iPad VPN. This is a bewildering area, so instead of recommending a single model; I make some general recommendations. First, noise-canceling (active) headphones and full-size headphones require more power than most — a concern if you plan to fall asleep on the flight and wake up with a dead battery.

Some audiophiles using an iPad VPN swear by the rather terrifying ‘in-the-ear-canal’ type of headphones. I personally can’t stand them and the only thing worse than the price – you can spend $200 on a set. Better (at least for me) are the infinitely cuter sounding “channel buds”. They’re cheaper, raise Apple’s standard, and best of all, don’t sound like a segment on “America’s Funniest Paste Tragedies.” (A show I would totally watch if someone was in the business).

Quality Case – A little further down the cool list, an iPad case not only protects your $500+ investment, but the data stored inside as well. Sure, it might be backed up, but that doesn’t help if you came to the meeting with a banana-shaped iPad and no presentation. While cool, Apple’s magnetic screen protector cases aren’t up to the task of protecting an iPad that you can drop on a tile (check), sit on (check), or flip over (Che… long story, not disingenuous). I have yet to find a case for the 2nd and 3rd generation iPads that is as good as Apple’s “mole skin” for the iPad 1.

MiFi – MiFi is a mobile phone without a phone and screen. Simply put, it’s a 3G modem with an onboard battery and enough operating system to connect to the cellular network and transmit via Wi-Fi. So even if your iPad only has Wi-Fi, you can access the web anywhere there is a signal. This assumes you have an airtime contract for the MiFi, but it really makes sense when you’re traveling. When you arrive, simply buy a prepaid or unpaid contract from a local provider and insert it into your MiFi. Now you have internet access on your iPad, mobile phone or even laptop. And you can share it with fellow travelers or just bask in the glory of being the only one without a huge data roaming bill when you get back!

If you have an old Android smartphone, you can use them as a MIFI through their tethering feature. Whether you’re using an older smartphone or a MiFi, note that these units only support up to five connected devices, so don’t give out your password to too many people to avoid being locked out!

A number of add-ons complement it and help you get the most out of your iPad VPN. Make sure your iPad VPN is always secure to get the most out of your device.
