Mandy Mac Modern Cloth Nappies

My little girl is growing up now, so she’s moving out of diapers and into toilet training pants. For me, it’s kind of sad that I won’t need the wonderful Mandy Mac diapers anymore (at least until the second baby comes along!)

You may be wondering why I’m writing about modern cloth diapers today, since I used to advocate natural baby hygiene. I still think natural baby hygiene is the way to go, but it also works best if you start from birth. Something I didn’t do because I didn’t find out about it until my daughter was six months old. We get on well together at Natural Infant Hygiene, so she switched from full-time diapers to part-time diapers, as she is successfully toileting most of the time at twelve months old. When baby number two graces us, I’ll be using my Mandy Mac diapers while learning baby’s elimination cues and going on hikes.

So why do I think Mandy Mac’s modern cloth nappies are the bomb?

1. The design

One-size-fits-all diaper with built-in liner to catch solid waste. Whether made from a hemp/cotton blend or a bamboo/cotton blend, they fit babies of all sizes from birth to traditional western toilet training age. Its shape is almost identical to that of a disposable diaper, so people can easily work it out. You put on the diaper, pull the front up over the baby’s crotch, and fasten the sides with an elastic snap or some pins.

Another great thing about the design is that they are not waterproof. Now, you might think that a diaper requiring an additional PUL cover would be more fuss than it’s worth, but it’s not. The basic idea of modern cloth diapers is to change them when they are wet, and not to let the child sit in the soiled diaper until it “expires”, as you would with a disposable. If you use modern cloth diapers, your baby will feel wet and is usually unhappy with this feeling. It will let you know that you need to change, and that serves two great purposes. First, a modern cloth diapered baby rarely gets diaper rash. The bottom is kept clean and dry and does not come into contact with waste. You may still get the odd teething rash, but it has nothing to do with how clean your diapers are. Secondly, you can go to the toilet earlier, because the baby does not like wetness. This helps with natural infant hygiene as well as traditional western toilet training, as even during traditional toilet training it is often recommended to switch to cloth diapers for this very reason.

Also, by not using a PUL cover at home, the diaper material is more breathable and further improves the hygienic environment for your baby’s bottom.

However, if you use a PUL cover over the Mandy Mac diaper, you can be sure that your baby’s diaper won’t fill up and create a puddle where she sits until it’s time to get changed in the changing room. him again. PUL is more breathable than plastic covering.

2. The tissues

They are made from a hemp/cotton blend or a bamboo/cotton blend.

Bamboo is soft, delicate and highly absorbent. This is a beautiful fabric and if you only have one child, this is a great option. Because of their high absorbency, diapers may take longer to dry, especially if you live in a wet and cold location.

Hemp holds up well and dries faster, but can sometimes be a bit scratchy. This is actually not a problem, because the baby’s body is not in contact with the hemp itself, but with the built-in liner, so the slightly harder texture of the hemp diaper is not really a problem. Also, hemp is very durable, so depending on your intended use, you may need to use hemp if you want to pass it down to future children.

Mandy Mac has some fabulous overnight diapers called “Purple Nights”. It’s called that because the built-in lining is a beautiful royal purple color. They are made of bamboo, which makes them extremely absorbent, and with twenty-two layers of bamboo, baby can get through the night without a diaper. It is best used when the baby sleeps through the night and no longer wakes up to nurse in the middle of the night. I have three. One to use, one to wash and one to line.

3. Ethics

Mandy Mac’s modern cloth diapers are not only environmentally friendly, they are made in a fair trade working environment. Diaper changers receive fair wages and excellent benefits for themselves and their communities in exchange for their work.

So how many modern cloth diapers would you need to get started?

As a newborn, you can expect to need about 8-10 diapers a day until they get into a comfortable feeding and sleeping routine, especially if you’re a breastfed baby. Don’t worry, it won’t take long for a newborn to settle into a comfortable routine and you can start to reduce the number of diapers you need because you can predict how often you’ll need to change them.

A 3- to 6-month-old baby may need about six to eight per day.

A baby between 6 and 18 months may need about six a day, plus one Purple Nights for nighttime use.

I bought 14 Mandy Macs, 3 Snappies, 3 PUL covers and 3 Purple Nights. I also use a couple of pre-folded cotton diapers if it rained and the clothes didn’t dry in time! You can use a tumble dryer for your modern cloth diapers, I simply don’t for environmental reasons.

Where did I get them?

You can get them from Mandy Mac herself, but I bought mine from a wonderful fair trade baby shop in Canberra called Brindabella Baby. I’m not affiliated with Brindabella Baby at the moment, I just think that a fair trade focused baby store is a very good idea and should be supported. At the time of writing, they have a six-pack of Mandy Mac Hemp at a very reasonable price, and they estimate that you can save thousands of dollars by choosing modern cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers. They also offer a 9-month grace period so that you can pay back in installments during your pregnancy.

So, Mandy Mac, they are for me and my babies. What do you choose for yours?
