Is It Vitally Important To Know The Place of the Prophet and Prophetic Ministry Today?
Read this carefully and with thanksgiving – and experience what is real.
After looking briefly at the prophets through this Scripture, let’s stop and think about the person of the prophet and the place of the “prophetic ministry.”
There is a great need for the prophetic ministry – people who hear from God and say what God wants them to say – and we hear a lot about prophetic ministry today – but what we hear as “prophecy” is no more than “wishful thinking “. – or people who want to bless you with some encouragement.
One of the main differences between Old Testament and New Testament prophecy is that in the New Testament people judge whether the Word is from God or not.
When a prophet speaks, you can choose – 1 – Change – or 2 – Kill the prophet.
Luke chapter 11 verse 52. The prophet is the key to what God does—and what God does, He reveals to the prophets.
Sometimes it is for immediate sharing – other times the prophet must remain silent about the word for weeks or months.
A clear trumpet sound is needed – and the prophet is seen as God’s voice or trumpet.
Now there can be false prophets – the bank teller can sense a false “five” without looking at it. You don’t even have to look at him – just say, “Excuse me, sir.” He is so skilled. And he does NOT go in with a coin and a £5 note on it – he makes it look as good as he can.
Luke chapter 7 verse 14. This is a prophetic word. In a miracle – different gifts of the Holy Spirit can work at the same time.
Verse 16. Jesus is called “the great prophet”.
These are real men in this book – Jesus – Peter – Paul – Moses – Isaiah – Jeremiah – and the rest. They pull their pants up one leg at a time.
Verse 39. Religious people do not recognize prophets.
Verse 40. This is called confrontation.
Jesus continues to teach – verse 45 – don’t miss what God is doing. It is so easy to be doctrinally correct and ignore what the living God is doing.
Verse 37. The alabaster box was part of the prostitute’s equipment.
A prophet can penetrate, permeate and shock the entire religious world.
Luke 24 verse 19 Jesus – Prophet in word and deed.
Being a prophet – being a prophet – is NOT a 9 to 5 job – it involves your whole life. God touches everything – work – car – home – finances – everything.
A prophet is an oracle – a mouthpiece – who acts as a mouthpiece for God – His words in your mouth. It almost bypasses your brain – sometimes it has to – or you
he would never say the words.
So the prophet must be sure that God has given him the Word.
Don’t say, “The Lord told me,” when He didn’t!
I have met very few people who heard God’s voice – and received God’s word to speak prophetically.
Larry Christenson explains to a group of us at a leadership conference in Germany: “I decided to go to the conference in Kenya. Others would say, ‘The Lord led me to go to that conference in Kenya.'” Now of course, both can be true – but there needs to be a balance.
In prophecy – when you prophesy – when the Lord stops speaking, then there are two of you. How often was the word of prophecy—and when the Word of God was finished, the prophet continued to speak.
When God chooses a prophet – when He builds a prophetic ministry – He chooses someone in the body of Christ – and most of the time they are very reluctant.
Either a prophet or an impostor. The Church judges.
God calls man – gives a prophet to the body of Christ – and the body recognizes him.
In the “Didache” – if a prophet comes among you – stay for two or three days – do not let him speak – then let him prophesy. It took them two or three days to notice.
This is what we must exercise from time to time in the whole field of prophetic ministry—discernment.
A prophet cannot bear it – idolatry – injustice – formality – false weighting.
Moses and the golden calf—the prophetic Moses—was concerned about the moral character of God—and the character of God’s people.
Jeremiah chapter 1 – four negatives and two positives – and Jeremiah wanted to run a mile. I can’t do it – don’t ask me to, GENTLEMEN!!
I’ve been there – I know the reality of it – right?
God had left the church at that time – and even the priests did not know – Jeremiah
Chapter 2 verse 8. They didn’t miss him. Jeremiah is on a demolition mission.
The prophet is a seer – he sees something – they could see what was coming.
Jeremiah and the Underwear – Chapter 13 – quite dramatic – better withdraw the word pretty. It’s a mess, oh my God – but I have to take it. Chapter 20.
The prophets were sometimes given strong, heavy burdens.
In the New Testament, prophecy always strengthens – encourages – and comforts. I Corinthians chapter 14 1-5.
Speaking in tongues and interpretation are the value of prophecy.
Verse 27. (If you were writing about our current situation, it would probably be something like this – at least one of you should.)
Verse 29. A prophecy was given. When God speaks, don’t you think the least we can do is stop and think about what He said – its significance – and what it might be all about.
It is not intended as a guideline – but as a confirmation – or insight.
Building the Church is important – building ourselves is just as important, but it is done in a different way.
They do everything for the building up of the Church – the building up of the Church. And in the case of prophecy, the Church judges! This is NOT the same as criticizing – or being suspicious.
The first prophetic word I know I spoke was in November 1969 at a Fountain Trust conference in Yorkshire: “I have a work to do, and in My name you will do it”. It was for my brother and friend Jim Kincaid, who was prayed for before he left Scotland for South Africa – and he, his wife Val, went and did the job!
Verse 37. Prophets must be aware of Control – Order – Regulation. An evil spirit intervenes.
The prophet reminds people of GOD – JESUS – the BIBLE.
Would you like a definition of prophecy? “The ability given to a believer by the Holy Spirit to speak words that come from God and that do not come from the believer’s own wisdom, understanding, or education. Some people see written words – or see visions – or just begin to speak .”
Verse 39. Strive to – want – and be ready to take risks.
“Almighty God – loving Father – teach us – guide us – use us – in this dark, hurting world – where there is such pain and suffering. Raise up men to speak and preach and teach Your Immutable Holy Word. Jesus, anoint them, who have been called you, with love and grace and strength and courage—and sensitivity and tenderness when needed. Amen.”
