Dog to Bearded Dragon

I consider myself a dog person; I need the addiction that dogs bring. When my dog was gone, I didn’t know how to fill the void. I had my Chihuahua for 15 years, we practically grew up together, and now my best friend is gone. I didn’t know what to do next, but I knew I needed a best friend. I looked around at different pet stores; different kinds but I just couldn’t connect the dots. One day I went to buy Chinese food at the strip mall near my house and noticed a Reptile Pet Shop. I have decided that I do not intend to buy all reptiles.

To me the reptiles were cold, they couldn’t associate and they just wanted to eat me, I didn’t really see them in a very good light. Anyway, I went in because I was curious and wanted to confirm my assumptions. I walked in and the first thing that hit me was the smell, WOW! What was it? It smelled like a reptile! Something completely foreign to me. I looked around; I saw snakes, lizards, turtles and spiders. The whole time I was there I had goosebumps and a weird tingling sensation on my skin. Once I was sure that this place was not for me and I did not understand why people were interested in reptiles, at that moment I knew that it was not my favorite. Well, what do you know, I was walking around to the front of the pet store and I see a tank full of tiny little lizards and I thought how cute!

I asked the pet store about the little lizards and he said “These are bearded dragons” and I thought what a name, scary. The attendant asked if I wanted to hold one and I thought I was going to die, of course I declined. I came out of the pet store a little better, I thought huh, those little bearded dragons are so cute, I wonder if they bite.

I kept going to the reptile store and staring at the tank with tiny bearded dragons, I kept thinking about it and one day I decided to pet one. I asked the chaperone, who now knows me by his first name and gave me visitation rights, if I could hold one and he nearly passed out. I wish I could have seen his face; he was so confused that I went over to the other side. He reached in and selected the smallest bearded dragon in the container and placed it in my palm. I thought I was going to die when I felt the rough skin and the spikes on the side of the face. In a split second, the tiny Bearded Dragon looked at me and I swear I heard him say “mama”. I was in love!!!

I started negotiating, I needed a tank, lights, sand, food, rock, branch, etc. this little girl will have the best apartment in town. Mr. Pet Shop Attendant set everything up for me, put everything together, and sent me on my way. I got home, set Ophelia up in her new luxury apartment and hit the internet, all I needed to know about Bearded Dragons and wanted to be the best mom in the Bearded Dragon World.

Here are some things I found, indeed important if you decide like me, you want such a beautiful and gentle pet.

The lighting is extraordinary important, You need UVA and UVB. Simply put, you need a lamp that keeps them warm, and you need a lamp that provides the sun’s rays. Basically, they must be provided with a habitat that is similar to their environment. The heat lamp helps with body temperature and digestion. Fluorescent light will be used for the sun’s rays. You can use many types of heating elements, hooded lamp, heating rock, ceramic heat emitter, heating pad, etc., which is important to provide them with a heat source. In addition, if you choose sand, as I did, the sand contains calcium, which they need. In my opinion, since bearded dragons come from the Australian desert, I felt that sand would be closer to their natural habitat, but you could use wood shavings, newspapers, etc. And finally the food I have found to be the best food for my Bearded Dragon. it was a combination of crickets, super worms, wax (treat only) worms, romaine lettuce and shredded carrots.

He bathes once a week, which helps with excretion and digestion.

My Ophelia (a reference to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, by the way) is now 2 1/2 years old, and when I go into the Reptile Pet Shop, people marvel at her. He is orange in color, big, stout and very alert.

So if you’re like me and decide to go over to the other side, I highly recommend the gentleness of a beautiful bearded dragon!
