Creativity Leads to Family Enrichment
CREATIVE GUARANTEE FOR FAMILIES
I was greatly enriched by reading stories to my daughter every night until she was twelve. To this day, we share these rich experiences. Many years ago we were sitting on the couch and I was making drawings for my daughter. He told me how he wanted the figure to look, and I drew that figure as best I could. It was just a fun game at the time, but it was this kind of creative play that honed my daughter’s creative talents in the future and bonded us closer than two creative interactions. But what I’ve learned is that giving kids personal time is better than prioritizing whatever video game they can play, better than any late report you might have to give, better than huddled around the TV, better than anything else. And here’s why…
When reading, writing, painting, drawing, etc. he interacts with his children and bonds with them. The personal, daily parent/child dialogues: “…took my ball, called me a rat, do your homework, don’t mess up the kitchen, feed the dog, wipe your feet”…. ..simply not part of the interactive creative dialogue. Parent and child are on the same level. They are all going through creative times – your children enjoy listening to you read to them, you enjoy drawing pictures with them and telling stories about the pictures, you all have fun and write about the day you got your cute little kitten, who has now grown into a huge and rather pompous family cat grew up.
FORGET THE PARENT/CHILD DIALOGUE
You get out of the petty mess where the parent scolds the kids and the kids react negatively. Doing reading, writing, and art projects together puts everyone on the same page. IF you keep the game on an equal level with all participants and forget the parent/child roles you usually play, you will have a ball!
OK, but there’s still soccer, football, ballet, and when in the world do you find time to play creatively? Make time for creative interaction. Yes, it’s important that your son’s team wins the next game and you should be there to cheer them on. But if we take a little time, even twenty minutes, to read, write, draw together, you will win her heart like a reliable and loving parent who is willing to meet her on her level and share a creative process with her.
THE MESSAGE IS THE MENTAL MASSAGE
Life is rushing, children grow up fast. If you use this twenty minutes once or twice a week, it will change the structure of your life. Yes, it will be hard to distract them from their video games and texting friends. But soon your message will be clear: “I just want to spend some time with you.” No lectures, no admonitions, no talking down – just time together on a small project to discover what you’re both made of, without the parent/child roles. Try this one night. Turn off the TV. Turn off video games. Sit down with the children and make up a story. Just a little simple story. Then everyone draws it. Pass the drawings and talk about the drawing – don’t criticize, don’t put it down, just talk.
Okay, everyone is yawning – I know. But it goes away if you repeat it the next week and the next. You start to feel good. It can be a little scary at first. It’s not a video game or TV. It’s just you and the kids. Do not worry. You’ll soon discover a few things about yourselves—family things that soccer and ballet don’t really work with. For example, who you are as connected human beings, what you think of each other, and how you can look at each other and admire yourselves for who you are.
THAT NICE CREATIVE FEELING
Do you remember how you wanted to paint an oil painting? Remember that drawing class you took at community college and love it? Think of the creative things you’ve done, like finding the right knobs for the kitchen cabinet, installing low-voltage lighting around the driveway to dramatically illuminate the trees and bushes, or making that silly birthday card for your kid because you just couldn’t find it. appropriate? Got a warm glow from these projects, right? Good.
CREATIVE TIME FOR YOURSELF
Take some creative time for yourself. Okay, right now your privacy is between 10:30 and 11:00, when you can read a few pages from the local library of that novel you’ve renewed three times and then crash. Suitable for OWN creative twenty minutes once or twice a week. Decide what you will do in those twenty minutes. Draw, paint, write? Connect with your creative mind – not for the boss, but for yourself. Recall your favorite places and pictures from your childhood. Write or draw about them. Add color to your life with pastels, acrylics, or oils. Discover the magic of artistic media and skills. Sit down at a sketch pad and draw your houseplants. Take a pastel photo of your neighbor at your last New Year’s Eve party (it was pretty funny, wasn’t it?)
It lasts for a month. After these creative times, you will feel the ripple effect. It feels good to instruct your conscious and subconscious mind to be creative and delve into parts of your brain that give you a healthy, balanced sense of being (even wisdom!). Then increase the number of minutes. Try twenty to thirty minutes a day. The ripple effect will be more like a positive outpouring of good feeling that seizes the power of your mind that has been dormant for too long.
self-development, creativity, growing a family
