Baby Sleep Problems – Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night

As a mother of three adorable children (one of whom is a toddler), I know how difficult it is for new parents to deal with sleep issues. As babies, all of my children had trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night. After many sleepless nights, my husband and I were depressed, exhausted and suffering from a constant lack of sleep. Our friends’ babies have already slept through the night, but my first-born daughter has not. I am trying to find a solution, I have read many books, looking for answers. I found a number of proven attitudes and time-tested techniques that worked well with my babies. Here are some of them:

  • Do not force the baby to sleep. Sleep should be a pleasant state and safe enough to stay inside. The parent’s goal should be to help the baby develop a healthy attitude toward sleep.
  • Try to avoid advice that suggests your baby should “cry it out”, especially in the first six months. This can damage the development of trust between the baby and the parent.
  • Stay flexible because no one technique always works for every baby. If certain techniques don’t work for your family, skip them. Every baby has a different temperament at night. What doesn’t work one week may work the next. That’s why it’s so important to follow your heart. Eventually you will find the best solution.
  • Breastfed babies need to eat more often than bottle-fed babies, usually every two to three hours. This prevents them from sleeping peacefully through the night until they are three to seven months old.

You can try the following sleep boosters that have worked for my children:

  1. Maintain the right temperature and humidity in the bedroom. Temperatures around 69 F and 50% humidity are best. Dry air can cause nasal congestion and increase the incidence of allergies in babies. All this can disturb the baby’s sleep.
  2. When putting the baby to sleep, create darkness in the bedroom. Do not turn on the lights or the TV while you are feeding him.
  3. It is very important to recreate a cozy and comfortable environment like in the womb, where the baby spent nine months. So, if your baby seems uncomfortable in the crib, try using a stroller, bassinet, or pram for comfort. Swaddling or swaddling your baby can make your baby more comfortable and secure, and prevent jerking movements that might wake him up. It is also useful in soothing some colicky babies.
  4. Try rocking your baby to sleep in a rocking chair. Walking, massaging, or patting your baby on the back while singing lullabies can be very soothing.

  7. Another good alternative is to drive in the car until the baby falls asleep. The cold night air and constant movements help the baby to calm down.
  8. Some babies find it helpful to put them in a sling or carrier and carry them around the house. The rocking chair helps your baby to calm down.
  9. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine is very important. With the help of familiar rituals, babies fall asleep more easily and sleep longer. For example, a warm bath before bed, massage, rocking, feeding, singing, etc. its rituals can teach you to wait and help you fall asleep.

Be aware of medical causes of insomnia. If you’ve tried these techniques and nothing works for you, be aware of various medical conditions that can interfere with sleep, such as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), breathing problems, or various allergies.
