Betta Diseases – Curing Fish With a Salt Bath
Since many betta diseases are caused by improper tank conditions, most of these ailments can be treated in the same way. A salt bath might be the last thing you think of that would benefit your freshwater betta fish, but it’s actually a very effective, age-old remedy that’s one of the first steps you should take to get your betta back to health.
How can salt help a freshwater fish, you ask? The bacteria and protozoa that attack fish when their immune systems are insufficient are very low single-celled life forms. Common betta diseases are transmitted to your fish by these simple life forms.
They have almost no defense system, so even a gradual change in the salt level of the aquarium causes instant death for these primitive creatures. They simply cannot adapt quickly enough to changes in their environment.
Why doesn’t it hurt my betta, you ask? Fish are more complex creatures, and their internal organs, such as their kidneys, help them cope with changes in their external environment. They are much tougher than microscopic bacteria. Therefore, very small changes in the salt level of their tanks cause them almost no noticeable discomfort.
To find out what ratio of salt to fresh water to use, refer to the instructions for your particular fish. Generally, a ratio of one tablespoon per 5 gallons of aquarium water is adequate for continuous conditions, but this level should be increased significantly if Betta diseases are treated in a holding tank or bucket.
If you use salt to treat a sick betta, you only need to take one step to get your fish back to health. If it is healthy, ongoing tank maintenance should be followed and other tips and tricks can be used to ensure your betta lives as long and healthy as possible. Most bettas live an average of about six months, but with proper preparation and care, you can have a lively, lively betta for three to five years.
