When Should I Have Plastic Surgery Before My Big Event?

I recently met with a post-operative patient and came across a situation worth talking about. This was a patient who had undergone facial surgery and as a result had some cosmetic issues that required modification. Only then did I realize that the urgency of the operation was primarily due to an upcoming event. Now the patient has to attend this event, which does not look as good as he would have liked. The biggest disappointment for everyone involved.

This unfortunate situation speaks to the timing of elective plastic surgery before an important life event. How much time should be allowed for proper recovery? The answer can be very different depending on the type of plastic surgery one is having. As a general rule, I find that many patients are a bit optimistic about how long it will take to feel or look good, but there is one thing they never think about…complications. There is a rare but real possibility that a problem will develop after surgery that will delay recovery. Although complications usually cause discomfort, they are catastrophic for a person’s life. But in the case of an upcoming wedding or overseas trip, for example, the stakes are much higher.

For major body plastic surgeries, such as tummy tucks and large amounts of liposuction, the appropriate recovery period is at least 6 weeks. Even more ideal is to allow 3 months before going on a cruise, overseas trip or beach holiday. These actions are harder on the body than one might think, and it takes a long time to get back to enjoying such events. Minor complications, such as seromas (accumulation of fluid) or extruding sutures, are common after body surgery involving long incisions and often do not occur for several weeks to a month or more after surgery. Three months is a good time to overcome these potential problems.

Facial plastic surgery poses different recovery issues than your body. Facial restoration is more about appearance than physical limitation. Major cosmetic facial surgeries such as facelifts, eyelid and eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty (rhinoplasty) or multiple facial implants cause swelling and changes to the face that take time. Since we are all very aware and sensitive to the smallest details of our face (although most people are not), you may not look normal for a while. This is a critical concern when it comes to an upcoming wedding, public speaking engagement, or any event where someone is in the spotlight. Facial complications are almost always minor, but they affect appearance and never improve quickly enough. For these reasons, major facial surgeries require at least three months of recovery, and 6 months is more ideal.

For “minor” plastic surgery, such as breast augmentation or more limited cosmetic facial surgery, these recovery periods are not required. I understand that the desire for plastic surgery can sometimes be quite impulsive, and the consideration of it can be emotionally upsetting. But major events in life can be one-off events, the planned plastic surgery can be performed at any time.
