Good Oral Hygiene Should Be Taught Early to Save Your Child’s Teeth

Good oral health must start when your child is young. Health habits taught early continue to provide benefits throughout your child’s life. But without proper care and attention, even babies and young children can develop serious and painful dental disease. Children’s dental care is very important for your child’s health and well-being.

The most common cause of tooth loss in young children is not accidents or injuries, but baby bottle tooth decay (BBTD), a serious and rapid form of tooth decay in babies and toddlers. Don’t let the name Baby Bottle Tooth Cay mislead you, as it is a condition that also involves solid foods that your child eats, including highly harmful sugary foods such as sweets and desserts. The three elements necessary for tooth decay in a baby or young child are teeth, plaque, and foods/drinks containing sugar and starch.

Even babies with brand new baby teeth have plaque, which is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on the surface of their teeth. When plaque comes into contact with sugar and sweets, the bacteria in the plaque produce acids that attach and dissolve tooth enamel. This breakdown of enamel leads to the formation of a cavity.

Every time your baby or toddler consumes sugary or sweet liquids or foods, the acids produced by the plaque attack the baby teeth. After multiple attacks by these acids, cavities can begin to form. Most young parents are surprised to learn that liquids that are good for babies, such as milk, formula, breast milk, and fruit juices, all contain varying amounts of sugar. These nourishing fluids can actually contribute to the development of cavities in your children. Sugary fluids collect around the baby’s teeth and gums, and the sugar acts as an energy source for bacteria that produce acids that attack the teeth and create cavities.

But tooth decay in infants and young children can be prevented. Parents should be extra careful about what they feed their children. Many parents use a bottle or milk to soothe their baby during naps and bedtime; however, the sugary fluids collect around the teeth and gums and begin to form cavities. The best way to prevent tooth decay is to put the child to sleep without a bottle, because when the baby sleeps, the natural flow of saliva decreases and the body does not wash away the sugary liquid. This allows plaque to form. Try the following instead:

· Security blanket, teddy bear or pacifier

· Music

· Swing

· Reading to your child

· Rocking the baby to sleep with the baby swing

If you feel that your child needs a bottle to sleep, fill it with water.

Good habits adopted early on create the basis for healthy smiles in the future. Teaching good oral hygiene habits from the beginning and avoiding sugary drinks and foods, especially during the holidays, is crucial in preventing dental diseases in young children.
