Buying a Circular Saw

Looking for a new circular saw? I am. I have an old cheap one that I bought at Home Depot about 10 years ago and it almost had my torture. So now I’m looking at my options for buying a new circular saw. Do I go wireless? How much will I use? what do i need How much power do I need in my circular saw?

I talked to my brother Joe about it. He is an entrepreneur in Buffalo, New York and a big fan of DeWalt tools. He always strives for top quality in his tools. Joe said that cordless circular saws are good for working on roofs or in areas with limited or no power. When it comes to power, Joey says newer cordless tools have almost the power of corded tools. Almost, but not quite, and certainly not if you use them to cut framing pieces all day. Joe also has a worm gear and a regular circular saw. He pulls out his Skil HD77M wormdrive circular saw when he needs to cut through the big stuff. But when you’re going to be cutting 2x4s all day, use the lighter DeWalt 368K. And for cutting on the roof, he uses DeWalt’s cordless DC300K with NANO battery. Joe said he got into NANO technology because it’s freaking cold in Buffalo, and he wanted the reliability of lithium-ion batteries that work just as well in the cold. And the best thing about them is that DeWalt NANO batteries are backwards compatible with all DeWalt cordless tools.

Hmmm. But what kind of circular saw do I want? While I’m not an entrepreneur, I’m an avid DIYer with a sweet job as the editor of a gadget blog. Yes, I get a big discount on the high quality tools sold at Toolking Superstore and I’m sure I’ve taken advantage of it! (shameless plug ;0) But seriously, even if I didn’t get the discount, ToolKing has the lowest prices, especially if you choose the refurbished versions (believe me, I looked it up). ToolKing’s secret (for all you e-commerce wannabes out there) is that they buy in very high volume from companies like DeWalt and Makita, and that leverage gets them a better price, which they then pass on to their customer, aka: you.

Anyhoo ~ back to circular saw shopping.

Wired versus wireless

I am debating whether to choose a cordless or corded circular saw. My husband and I bought the ugliest, smallest house in our neighborhood, so we’re pretty much in the middle of remodeling our entire home. Since we both work full-time, we adapt in fits and starts. Our circular saw just broke on us on the last project. We built an outdoor terrace with 6×6 paving stones. Poop, our circular saw is gone, that’s enough. Like I said before, it was old, cheap, and from Home Depot. Okay, maybe we pushed the 6x6s a bit, but who doesn’t push their tools to the limits of what they should be used for? Especially home owners, who typically don’t have as large a selection of tools as a contractor, or don’t always have the “right tool” for the job (the right tool for the job would have been a Prazi-equipped circular saw joist attachment).

After a bit of debate, we decided to go with a corded circular saw or a lithium-ion battery powered circular saw as we often go weeks or months between projects. When we need to use the circular saw, we want to use it now. Lithium-ion batteries have a long life, which means they will stay charged even if they sit on the shelf in the garage (in the cold) for several weeks. They are also extremely light. So if we go cordless, we choose a circular saw with a lithium-ion battery. Makita makes a nice LiIon circular saw that you can get with the purchase of their LXT700 18v LiIon combo kit. The LiIon circular saw in the LXT700 kit has a 6-1/2 inch blade, not the 7-1/4 we’re looking for.

I went into the Toolking store. The ToolKing store has a great setup, Doug and the guys redesigned the whole layout so now you can touch and hold all the tools. I love this! You can actually find out which one you like better, because when it comes to options, there are many high-quality devices available, but which one is more comfortable for you Your hands? Most contractor-grade circular saws have a 15-amp, powerful motor, a magnesium housing (for light weight and strength), at least a 45-degree cutting capacity, and excellent safety features. Personally, I have to pick each one up as if I’m going to use it and check the position of the handles for comfort and how good my line of sight is to the blade.

I compared these circular saws:

1. I picked up the DeWalt DW368K. Lightweight at 9.5 pounds, it’s durable enough to withstand a one-story drop. The DeWalt DW368K also has a 56-degree bevel capability.

2. The Makita 5007FAK is a little heavier at 11.1 lbs, but has this cool built-in LED light and a ruler on the foot plate. How many times do you work in a room with the light behind you?

3. I am a big fan of Bosch because I learned all about their power tool recycling program and other proactive environmental projects. A very nice feature of the Bosch CS20 (10.3 lbs) saw is the Direct Connect cord management system. There is no cord in the Bosch CS20, the power cable must be plugged in. So you never have to worry about replacing the cable or throwing away the tool because the cord is broken. The Bosch CS20 also has a blower on the front that blows sawdust out of the way as you cut, so you can see where you’re cutting. The Bosch CS20 is also inclined at 56 degrees.

4. Then there was the Porter-Cable 324MAG. Super light, the 324MAG weighs 9.6 lbs. Of the circular saws I looked at, only the Porter Cable brand had an exhaust port for vacuum attachment, which is a nice feature for working in the garage or around the house.

5. Milwaukee manufactures the 6394-21 Tilt-lok. It’s the most expensive at $175, but it has an exclusive Tilt-Lok handle that’s probably more adjustable than I am. The Milwaukee 6294-21 Tilt-Lok switch can be set to 8 different locking positions, making it easier to work at angles and overhead. The Milwaukee circular saw also has a 10-foot Quik-Lok cord for easy cord changes and a 3-horsepower motor that works as hard as my Polish carpenter dad.

A good circular saw should have enough power to cut through wet wood without slowing or dangerous kickback. A good circular saw should be light and durable because you will accidentally drop it on the ground. You should choose a circular saw based on balance, maneuverability and the feeling of holding it in your hand. Good luck!
