How To Decant a Bottle of Wine
Decanting wine is a simple process that improves the quality of the drink. This is also a step that I think should never be skipped. Why should a bottle of wine be decanted? To fully enjoy and experience a bottle of wine and add flavors, you need to decant and I’ll show you how.
First of all, you may ask, what is wine decanting? Decanting wine removes sediment from a bottle of fine wine, allowing you to pour the wine into a beaker-like vessel called a decanter. It also allows the wine to aerate and breathe. When the wine is poured from the bottle into the decanter, the wine is exposed to oxygen, which greatly improves the taste, aroma and aromas of the wine.
Full-bodied red wines are best suited for decanting, as they tend to have more sediment than lighter-bodied wines or white wines. Finely aged red wines aged between 6 and 15 years contain a lot of voluminous sediment, so they must always be decanted. Remember that when a wine is decanted, it ages quickly and does not retain its flavors and aromas for more than a day or two. Therefore, the wine is served shortly after decanting. I generally recommend serving the wine about an hour after the decanting process. Be careful not to decant well-aged wines between 20 and 30 years old. As wine matures, it becomes more fragile under the influence of air and spoils even faster. Well-aged wines should be served immediately from the bottle upon opening. If you decide to decant a wine aged 20 years or more, serve it immediately after decanting to reduce the risk of spoilage.
Now learn how to decant a bottle of wine. First of all, let the wine bottle you want to pour stand on the base for a day or two, so the sediment can settle. Then find a candle or put a flashlight on the table. If you’re using a flash light, point it at the beam, otherwise light the candle. It might sound strange, but don’t skip this step. Now stay about 3-5 centimeters above the candle or light the decanter in one hand and the wine bottle in the other and start pouring the wine into the decanter. Remember to pour slowly and evenly as you don’t want the sediment to accidentally end up in the decanter. Now this is where the light source comes in handy. Carefully watch as you approach the bottom of the bottle to make sure no sediment gets into the neck of the bottle. As soon as the sediment enters the neck of the bottle, immediately stop pouring and discard the amount left in the wine bottle, which should only be about 10% of the bottle. Now you can serve and pour the wine from the decanter into the glasses and enjoy the delicious pleasure! Once you’ve decanted a wine, you’ll never want it any other way.
