Creative Play for Babies – Newborn to 6 Months

New parents are bombarded with information about raising children. What diaper to use, whether to breastfeed and how to make the baby smarter. Millions of dollars are spent every year on products designed to make their children smarter and more alert.

But nothing beats parental interaction in helping a child grow and learn. Talking, singing and cuddling play a vital role in your child’s development. So is playing time.

From the moment a child is born, he is curious about the world around him. Every experience is new, from the feel of the blanket to the sounds around them. And each new thing helps them form relationships that help them grow and learn.

When my kids were babies, they loved playing and talking to me. Any game made them smile and laugh. They couldn’t wait to play with me. I did it too.

Since newborns are still getting used to their surroundings, be sure to watch your child for signs of overstimulation. If the child starts to fuss or cry, change the activity to something calmer, such as cuddling or rocking.

So what games can you play with your newborn to help them form these connections? Make sure you choose activities that are age appropriate for your baby and it will be as easy as 1, 2, 3.

From birth to 3 months of age

At this age, most babies are not mobile. They are completely dependent on you to take care of everything from feeding to transportation. This is a great age to show your baby the world around him. Remember that your newborn may take some time to respond to your toys. This is normal and does not mean that there is anything wrong.

What is this?

Newborns are fascinated by touch. They are soft, rough, furry, they are interested in everything. Now is the time to put that wardrobe you’ve spent a lifetime hoarding to a wonderful new use. Search your closet for items that have a wide variety of feelings and colors. Silk, suede, velvet, faux fur and cashmere sweaters are excellent choices. Let your baby experience them all for as long as they want. While you’re doing this, be sure to talk to you baby, tell her what she feels and sees.

Dancing doll

Music has the magic to soothe a cranky baby. Although not all babies like music, most are soothed. So why not take advantage of this and try dancing with your baby. Find music that your baby likes and that won’t put him to sleep. Turn it low and hold the baby, making sure to give the neck the support it needs. Then rocking, moving, dipping and just dancing. It doesn’t have to be perfect as long as you hold and bond with your baby. If your baby doesn’t like to dance, he might like you to dance. Exaggerated movements can keep your child engaged and entertained until they can dance.

Wow, look at that!

Babies love to feel new things. Their vision isn’t perfect right now, so they need to see things up close and personal. They find things we take for granted interesting. You can use this interest to introduce your baby to the world around him. The kitchen is a wonderful place where you can find many things that your baby can look at and touch. Spoons, whisks, spatulas, fruits, and vegetables are a variety of things you can let your baby look at and touch to learn about your home.

Up to 4-6 months of age

Babies are more active at this age. They learn to roll over and hold their head up. Approaching the sixth month, most babies learn to sit. Here are some games for their age group in addition to the previous ones.

Bubble burst

Now that your baby’s vision is improving, it’s time to take advantage of most children’s love of bubbles. A great game to play when you’re out and about is bubble popping. A small bottle of bubbles and a stick are enough to entertain your older baby. There are even little bubble bottles, complete with wands, that you can even keep in your diaper bag if you’re out and about for extended periods of time and baby is fussy.

Rocket Baby

Both my sons loved to fly. Zooming around the house as I supplied the power brought loud giggles from them. Playing Rocket Doll is simple; you just have to decide what kind of flying machines they should be. Airplanes zoom, dip, and circle the room. Rockets launch low and boom towards the ceiling. Take the queuing out of your child and you can’t go wrong.

Belly Furps

Babies love to be touched and tickled. A fun thing to do with your child is belly fur. This is how you take a breath, place your lips on your child’s bare belly and blow gently. You make a very funny sound and tickle your child. My boys still think it’s funny. Again, keep an eye on the child while playing. Stop if your child is upset by this action.

Creative play is a wonderful way to bond with your newborn and older baby. And help him develop his social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills.
