Mother Knows Best – The Shocking True Story That Inspired the Movie
Hate and disgust
Lee Goldsmith, a well-respected 67-year-old Boca Raton socialite, hated his son-in-law so much he hired someone to kill him. Goldsmith, eager to find a suitable husband for his daughter Arleen, a nurse in Delray Beach, wrote in the local paper: “Nice Jewish Girl Wants to Meet Nice Jewish Boy.” David Brownstein is the man who answered the ad and the two became inseparable. However, Mrs. Goldsmith could not bear the thought of her daughter marrying Brownstein because he was not professional. An air-conditioning car mechanic wouldn’t have been impressive enough for Goldsmith’s gregarious friends, so he hatched a plan to ruin his life. Goldsmith tried everything in the book, from forging letters and threatening to cut Arleen out of his will, to beating and blackmailing Brownstein, according to state testimony. But nothing would fuel his hatred more than not being able to attend his own daughter’s wedding or see his grandchild. So she decided it was time to get David Brownstein out of their lives for good.
The carpet cleaner seemed like the perfect guy to ask where he could find an assassin. He was hired to clean the carpet at the Goldsmith home when Lee asked him to help him find someone to kill the weasel. The man said he would see what he could do to help her, instead he reported the act to the police and received a $750 reward. The police then devised a plan to trap Goldsmith and pay an undercover officer for the job. The plan was to meet near a restaurant where Lee Goldsmith would give clear instructions on how to carry out the murder. The intended victim is shot in the head and drugged to appear as a drug-related murder. He paid Thomas Brennen $1,000 upfront, then paid the remaining $9,000 once the death was confirmed.
On February 8, 1989, David Brownstein kissed his wife Arleen before going to work, not knowing that his life would change forever. The police informed him of his plans to kill his mother-in-law, and he agreed to play along. The county morgue was also on the property. They were told to confirm David Brownstein’s death when Goldsmith called. On February 15, 1989, Brennen told Goldsmith that his son-in-law had died. Then he paid the balance, thanked the officer, and remarked with a chuckle how happy everyone would be, “except the one in the morgue.” The undercover cops videotaped Lee paying them to kill David as they met in Lee’s CADILLAC. He told the undercover cop that he would have another job in six months. He wanted David Brownstein’s mother to have acid thrown in her face. He laughed and laughed as he described exactly how he wanted to do it. The police moved in and arrested Lee Goldsmith and charged him with solicitation to commit first degree murder.
During the February 1990 trial, neighbors and friends described Lee Goldsmith as a gentle soul who never hurt anyone. He was described as a civic leader who did fundraisers and teaches exercises to retirees. Milton Goldsmith corroborated his wife’s story of the beatings and the letters she received. He stated that they were terrified of Brownstein. Arleen got angry when she was asked if she loved her mother. “If I said I didn’t love him, it would be a lie,” Arleen said. Meanwhile, Lee Goldsmith looked like he was falling apart for most of the trial. He broke down in tears after describing the beating he had suffered. David Browstein spent two hours on the stand denying any involvement in the beating or any behavior towards his mother-in-law. Lee Goldsmith was found guilty and sentenced to 5½ years in prison. “Please, God, no,” Lee said, collapsing after hearing the sentence. Her husband, Milton, was confused.
In June 1995, Lee Goldsmith was released on probation at the age of 73.
The case became a sensation. After his release from prison, Lee and Milton Goldsmith appeared on A Current Affair and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Mother Knows Best was released in April 1997.
I spoke with Lee Goldsmith on Easter Sunday, April 13, 2009. She informed me that her husband, Milton, had fallen, broken his neck, and never recovered. He passed away a few months ago. She said she feels lonely and depressed these days. He is 86 years old. He is no longer involved in fundraising. He spends most of his time at home. Goldsmith and his adopted daughter, Arleen, never spoke to each other again. Lee Goldsmith and I have never spoken about the crime and he only refers to it as “the incident”. He never knew it was made into a movie. Not familiar with many cable stations, she stated that “my husband took care of those things.” He said he wanted to see it. He wants me to let him know when the movie starts again.
