House Training A Dog: Four Steps To Successful Dog Toilet Training
House training a dog doesn’t have to be a long, smelly process. In fact, successfully toilet training a dog can be done in just a few days if you do it right.
My springer spaniel, Muggins, was only 8 weeks old when we brought him home, but by focusing on immediate potty training, we were accident free in no time. On the third day she was with us, she marched up to the sliding glass door and knocked on it with her tiny white paw. I opened the door, went out onto the lawn, and squatted down. Potty training a dog is that simple.
My current Springer, Ducky, has learned to go out the doggy door and into his backyard to do his chores in the same amount of time. We were accident free in a few days.
Dog toilet training has nothing to do with the toilet. It also has nothing to do with rubbing the dog’s nose in pee or poo, as recommended by old-school dog training. Toilet training a dog can be done in four simple steps:
1. Simple puppy training requires you to observe your dog as much as possible. Canines give signals when they need to pee or poop. They may be pacing or whining. They may start sniffing intensely. Keeping a close eye on your dog will not only prevent accidents, but is also the first step in teaching proper potty habits.
2. Always take the puppy outside after feeding, and every half hour (for puppies) and every hour (for adult dogs). Many dogs feel relieved immediately after eating. Taking advantage of this is a good training strategy. Taking your dog outside regularly will reduce the chance of accidents. You take your dog outside when you are pretty sure your dog needs to go. Your dog will do its thing and then apply step 3.
3. If you want quick results, pour praise. Praise your dog every time he pees or poops. I mean, go crazy with the praise. This is not the time for decency. If you want a house free of pee and poo, you have to clap your hands and scream, “How good is pee.” (Hint: you don’t have to call him Piss. The dogs don’t care what you call him. We tell Ducky, “A cop is a squat”.) You can also include treats as a form of praise. Use small, healthy treats to give your dog or puppy every time they go potty outside.
4. Crate training can help in step 4 of the training process. Confine your new pet until you are sure it has been successfully trained. For example, leaving the dog in a crate when you leave the house is a great way to reduce the chance of minor accidents. Dogs don’t like to mess up their ‘den’ and the crate is your dog’s den. When you are at home and the dog is out of the crate, confine your dog or puppy to any room in which they are. This will help with step 1, which is monitoring your dog.
House training your dog can be as simple as this – as easy as 1, 2, 3 (and 4). If you follow these steps, excuse the pun, you will be toilet training your dog.
