Cat Litter Disposal – Is Cat Litter Flushable?
What is the correct way to dispose of cat litter? If your cat is untrained, the answer is simple – clean the poop with tissue paper and rinse, wash the pee with more tissue paper and rinse. But what do you do after your cat does its business in the litter box? Can you get rid of it the same way – can cat litter be flushed out?
It depends on whether it’s urine or feces, and what type of cat litter you’re using. If you use sand for your cat’s litter box, do not rinse it. Even though there isn’t much sand that sticks to cat poop, your toilet will clog in the long run. The same goes for the other two main types of litter: clay cat litter and lumpy cat litter. A plumber’s bill to unclog your pipes will bankrupt you.
If you use crystal litter made from silica gel, disposing of cat litter is a little easier. The crystal cat litter absorbs the cat water without lumps, so it can be rinsed out in small quantities. It doesn’t stick to cat poop too much, so it can also be flushed down the toilet. However, it is still not advisable to do this regularly in the long term.
As for biodegradable cat litter, it depends. Some of them are made of rather large pellets, which can also choke the plumbing. Others are made of wood or sawdust and will go through without a problem. Still, if you have a septic tank, be aware that these materials may not break down immediately. We can talk about years – which will make the septic tank quite full. The thought of used litter and cat poo coming out of my blocked drain kind of gives me a cold sweat.
Some manufacturers have started producing flushable cat litter for greater comfort. Of course, these flushable cat litters are more expensive. In order for cat litter to be flushable, various biodegradable materials are used that must pass safely through the water line. These newer types of cat litter don’t turn into the kind of sludge that can clog sewage pipes – in theory. Some plumbers ask otherwise. In the course of their business, they have come across homes where sewage lines and water lines are clogged with flushable cat litter. At least that’s what the confused and distressed resident said. Who is lying here? I don’t know, but it’s probably not advisable to flush large amounts of garbage down the toilet.
It’s still best to dispose of most cat litter the old fashioned way – either bagged up with other rubbish or carefully buried somewhere in the garden. In the garden, cat urine and feces would make good fertilizer for grass and flowers. Cat urine and feces can contain dangerous bacteria, so it should not be used to fertilize vegetable and fruit trees.
I have to admit that a real flushable cat litter would be awfully comfortable when it’s snowing or raining. It would really simplify cat litter disposal.
