Nurse Practitioners’ Versatility Earns Them One of the Highest Salaries in the Nursing Profession

In 1965, the University of Colorado’s Nurse Practitioner program dealt with the problem of unaffordable health care for children. It was the first program to pave the way for career opportunities for nurses and healthcare for patients. Nurse practitioners are given more authority and autonomy in the clinical setting because of the level of knowledge and skills they acquire. Their job satisfaction does not end there; they are also one of the highest paid nursing professionals. The demand for their expertise increases with the decrease in the number of doctors entering the family medicine career.

They cover a wide range of tasks, including those previously limited to doctors. Their duties include performing physical examinations, diagnostic tests and treatments, evaluating tests and preparing prescriptions.

A nurse has two very important duties towards communities; these educate and promote people on the importance of a clean and healthy lifestyle. As they work in communities, they work closely with people and develop a relationship that pushes their goals toward success.

Their tasks are multifaceted and varied. The most important are:

1) Evaluation of patients’ medical records to determine what physical examination and preventive screening tests should be performed.

2) Give diagnosis and assessment

3) Create a care plan

They can also work in a nursing specialty. Here are some popular choices for specialization:

1) Neonatal care deals with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of care for newborns with health complications.

2) A nurse midwife or obstetrics/gynecology nurse provides care for pregnant women, such as antenatal care and the safe delivery of babies.

3) Geronotogical nursing specializes in the care of the elderly – the long-term care of chronic illnesses in a hospital or community setting.

4) Pediatric nursing focuses on the care of infants, children, and young adults.

5) The family nurse provides basic health care for individuals regardless of age.

6) Anesthesiology care primarily ensures the safe and appropriate anesthesia of patients.

7) Other specialties – endocrinology, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology.

Nurse Practitioners will never want a job, as the physician shortage increases the demand for their services in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and government agencies. More people turn to them for primary care because they can do most of the things a doctor can do and their education is relatively cheaper. The skills and knowledge of nurses make them one of the highest paid nurses in the field; they are paid between $70,000 and $120,000 per year, depending on factors such as location and specialization.
