Newborn Sleeping Area Considerations
A baby has many different sleep options, but how can a parent decide what’s best for their new baby?
Over the years, I have visited many families who have faced various challenges after the birth of a baby. I have collected some ideas from these that are worth considering before making a decision about where your baby will sleep:
1. Do you want them in your bedroom with you? If so, what size cot or basket can fit comfortably in your bedroom?
2. How to teach your child to sleep in a calm bed after learning to sleep swinging in the hammock?
3. You already have a crib, but it seems too big for a newborn. Consider adding a “snuggly bed” to the crib/crib until it grows.
4. You like the idea of your baby sleeping in the parent’s bed with you, but this is not advisable if one of the parents is obese, smokes or takes drugs.
5. The baby’s room is far from your room and you are afraid that you will not hear him cry. Consider using a baby monitor or temporarily moving your basket closer to your room.
6. Will the baby’s room be cold because there is little sun and they have to be born in winter? Consider another room for the first 3 months.
7. Is their sleeping area bright during the day because there are light curtains and direct sunlight? After 6 weeks, babies sleep better when the lighting is dim.
8. The nursery is upstairs but you will be downstairs most of the day, consider having two sleeping areas (one upstairs and one downstairs) for the first 3 months. The ground floor option can be a cot or pushchair/stroller.
9. There are animals and other children who open the door and wake them up. Consider a gate in the door or a tall deadbolt to close the door.
10. Often a father can be away a lot due to work, and the mother takes the baby to sleep in her bed. When the father returns home, there is minimal privacy as the baby no longer sleeps in the crib. Consider the sleep associations with which the baby learns to fall asleep.
Parents are always learning about parenting issues. Considering these challenges that some parents have faced can help establish good sleep habits for your baby early.
