How Falling in Love is Like Having a New Puppy

The night before Valentine’s Day, my husband Lorenzo came up the stairs with a small bundle of fur.

I looked up from my computer and asked, “What is this? Is it stuffed? Is it alive?” Lorenzo put the “fluffy ball” on the floor. He barely moved. I couldn’t see her eyes because of all her hair. But I knew. It’s a dog. (OH MY GOD!)

I couldn’t believe Lorenzo did that. I couldn’t believe he bought us a new puppy! (Talk about taking a risk!) But within the first week, I realized I was very much in love with a new puppy.

1. This is unexpected

Just like talking about love, you never expect it when it happens. Falling in love is what you will do once. When you meet the right person. When all your affairs are in order. Or after the next trip… Then you meet him and all your plans go out the window.

I couldn’t speak when Lorenzo bought me a dog. We discussed getting a dog. Someday. But here he was. Live. Real. In person.

Meeting Biscuit wasn’t a WOW moment like… “Oh WOW! I’m so excited!” And I run around screaming, “Oh WOW!” It was more like, “Oh. Wow. Oh. Wow. Oh. Hell. Oh. Wow.” This is OUR dog.

This is it. This is Love”? SHE. Wow.

2. It’s unpleasant

Like a couple kissing and petting each other in public, not caring who’s watching because they’re so in love… a new puppy is just as obnoxious.

I’ve never been one of those “dog people”. They are so obnoxious about their animals. Until now. Well, I’m an unpleasant “dog person”. And I don’t care who sees it. I want to show everyone my “love”. Oh, how happy we are! Isn’t it cute? I share stories of our encounters with strangers. (Happy sigh.) This is unpleasant. This is really quite disgusting.

3. It’s scary

In the beginning, “Love” is so fabulous. This is so new. This is very interesting!

Then you realize you have to live in real life. And “love” has needs. But you don’t know what they are because you just met. You don’t know each other at all. You don’t know what he means. And then the terror strikes. And just like falling in love, you find out that no matter how prepared you think you are, you’re not.

I was amused by the idea of ​​having a dog. I like the idea of ​​having a faithful companion to accompany me on my walks. I like the idea of ​​something cute looking up at me. I like the IDEA of having a dog. But the reality is, I know NOTHING about raising a puppy. I have no idea how to take care of it! What if I screw it up? What if I kill you?

I told Lorenzo that he couldn’t go back to work until the puppy was an adult. He couldn’t leave Biscuit alone! It was scary. (Lorenzo left me alone with Keks. I’m fine now.) (If you’re wondering.)

4. It’s hard to say no

Just like saying “NO” to sex too soon, it was just as hard to say “NO” to Biscuit when he wanted to jump on the couch. I really, really wanted him to come to me. It would be nice to snuggle with him on the couch, but this was our second day. I had to say “NO”. Jumping on furniture is not a habit I want to encourage.

My friends couldn’t believe my willpower. Most of them said, “You’re going to give in. You can’t resist. He has to be on the couch with you.” But I knew if I let him walk from the beginning, I would pay for it in the long run. I knew he wouldn’t respect me. I knew he was going to walk all over me. Spoiled.

And I knew that once I said “YES” it would be very, very hard to say “NO” again. If ever. (Okay, I’ll admit it…I’ve let it go a couple of times, but…not EVERY time!:))

5. It’s work, but so worth it

Like a romantic relationship, a new puppy is a lot of work. You have to nurture it. It takes time. You have another responsibility in your life. With someone who has his own ideas and opinions about things.

But you are committed. And that’s a priority.

With Biscuit, we bathe him, feed him, walk him, poop him, wash him, medicate him and take him to the vet.

And like a typical man, Biscuit is always in our business. He wants to be a part of it all! And I love it.

He is so happy. And playful. And adorable. (Everybody he thinks!) So good. (Everybody he says!) And very sweet. (Everybody he loves him!) (I warned…”This is unpleasant!”)

And I am such a Proud Mama. (I never I’ve heard myself say that before!) And even though I’ve never experienced childbirth, I believe that holding a newborn brought on similar emotions. Falling in love…it’s worth it!
