Why Do Mom’s Like Boffing?

My teenage son is actively tinkering. Actually, my whole family is lame! And I’m often asked why a mom like me encourages all ages in the family to continue to engage in such an exercise.

Actually, it’s simple.

It keeps a family together. Our whole family loves to poke around. Yes, from what some would call “oldies” like my husband and myself to our 10 year olds, we all enjoy tinkering! Even when our oldest comes over, he won’t hesitate to grab a bubble and go for it. (yes, it’s still an outdoor thing, not in the house, please) But please, never be too old to smile and laugh.

It stimulates the imagination. With boffers, you can be king of the hill, or fight a dragon and save a prince (you won’t find me saving him), or hire a pirate captain like Davey Jones. There’s no limit to what you can imagine, and that’s what I like about a game.

This is not a video game. You don’t need any other stuff to use it and it gets people off the couch.

No age limit! Although it might be harder for a little one to hold the bubble, I can play with a four to sixty year old. And no, you’re never too old to play. When we go to SCA events, you see a wide range of ages belching. You probably see the whole family there together. And a close-knit family ranks high in my books!

Safe! You know, if you’ve ever had siblings growing up, you’ve gotten into what they did at some point. Well, sometimes kids don’t take into account that older siblings or friends don’t fight as hard as they seem. And older siblings are more likely to be careful where they hit. I like that it’s safer than the sticks and broomsticks I used for swords as a kid. Especially using SoftSwords made by my son!

I’m not channeling my mom, yes I loved my mom, but everyone remembers something their parents said to this day (whether true or not) that makes you cringe. And among the phrases I so vividly remember my mother (honestly, sometimes she was someone else’s mother) screaming at my friends and myself were; “Stop it immediately!” “You’re going to take someone’s eye out if you keep going like this!” or the favorite “It’s all fun and games until I have to take someone to the hospital” (That was true and Tommy Morris wherever you are, I still shudder to think how I nailed that baseball bat to you when I didn’t believe everyone , when they say: “Don’t stand there, man, he’s throwing the bat” Sorry). I never have to worry about burping!

Size is not always an advantage. WGrowing up, I had two older brothers who didn’t hesitate to use me as a punching bag. Yes, my parents threatened to punish me if I didn’t hit my brothers, but my brothers always threatened to hit me if I did. So no matter how I went about it, it wasn’t going to be fun, so if they’d been mad at the time, maybe my kidhood would have hurt less. I think it’s great that you’re smaller than someone and still take it out. The bigger person might be able to reach it, but one of my favorite shots is on the knee and I don’t have to bend down to get it.

You don’t need a caravan to transport your equipment! Boffers go almost anywhere. It’s easy to fit them in a full car when we go camping or wherever. We take them to the lake, buy foam water balls and play water baseball. We also take boffers to picnics and to the park. We never hesitate to share when we see someone watching us. We even take them to local festivals and take them with us if we think there might be other like-minded people.

But my favorite reason: People smile as they take off. They don’t even know how to do it. It might not be a smiley thing for some people, but if you give someone a bubble and they forget their surroundings and go for it, the smile comes through every time. As a mother and as a person, I believe that a smile counts a lot.

So, as a mom, there’s more than just one thing I love about pottering. But as you can see, there are many things about pottering that the whole family can love and enjoy. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
