Strategies for a Productive Summer

In our busy and fast-paced world, summer is usually a time when kids are out of school, traveling, weddings and graduations, and family gatherings. This is the time when the frantic pace of work slows down a bit, simply because people who typically drive take a break. With this, you can get into the driver’s seat! This gives him a chance to take advantage of the downtime and position himself better to play at full strength when the pace picks up in the fall.

To help, I’d like to present five strategies to maximize this “season” when you or others (clients, colleagues, vendors, etc.) are away so you’re ready to pay the “premium” for the remaining period. the year!

1. Rest. The concept of periodicity means giving your body time to rest, re-engage and recharge (or train) to achieve maximum energy and desired results during the periods when you need to push harder. If you continue at 150km/h 24/7, you will burn out. More importantly, you won’t get the results you want. So plan time to relax every summer. (For you workaholics, vacation means no voicemail, no email, no clients, no “work mode,” and no initiatives that aren’t entirely enjoyable.) While on vacation, turn off work 100%! If you do, your ability will be twice as great, so it will be completely depleted when you return.

2. To clean. The days leading up to vacation are a great time to make a game plan for when you return. The launch date is a deadline that is unlikely to move. Start by challenging yourself to sort out your emails, do all the follow-ups, and close any open loops before you go. While you’re doing this, make a list of when you’ll be back, what you’ll do next. If you want to be at your most productive, schedule what you’ll be doing and when, so you can quickly get back into your work habits when you get back.

3. Schedule “catch-up” time. If you can, allow for a “roll-in” plan that provides personal time in the office to catch up on e-mails, e-mails, and other things that have accumulated while you’ve been away. People often return to a full schedule with no time to “reset” so they work on vacation. Resist the urge to work while you’re away. Instead, plan for the inevitable chaos that will be there when you return: block off part of the day when you first return to catch up.

4. Create a project plan. This season, if you don’t travel and leave it at the office while others are away, you may find yourself on “summer break.” Before this slower season even hits, make a plan for what you want to accomplish during your downtime. This is your “off season”. Use this time to complete projects that are important but not urgent: This is the time for projects you never seem to get around to, such as updating your website, reading, taking personal development classes, etc. You’ll use this time to be ready to dive into those projects once the slower season hits.

5. Take “time off” at home. Take a week off at home. Put aside those long-term projects, housework, and yard work. Spend an entire week clearing up all the frustrating and discouraging factors, like fixing the printer that always prints crooked, organizing the pots and pans, buying a calendar to organize the family, or moving the chair every morning. Plan a week where the focus is on streamlining, simplifying and organizing your home and personal life so you can move forward for the rest of the year!

Remember to allow yourself some real rest, declutter before you go and have a plan for how you’ll come back, make the most of the slower season at the office and tidy up loose ends at home. If you are active and intentional during this slower season, using the strategies we’ve discussed here today, you too will have a winning, successful year!
