7 Leading Causes of Stress
In 1967, Thomas H. Holmes and Richard H. Rahe of the University of Washington conducted a study on the relationship between major life events and disease. As part of the study, a table was compiled on the main causes of stress. This table, which in 1967 contained 43 causes of stress, was updated in 2006 to 55 causes. Society seems to be finding more and more reasons to feel stressed.
If you knew the main causes of stress in your life, would you take steps to eliminate them? Can you calculate the stress – or is it a dysfunctional condition that will be with you for the rest of your life, possibly killing you?
What is the main cause of stress?
1. Finances
Most studies agree that finances are a leading cause of stress. In a 2005 online poll conducted by LifeCare, Inc., 23 percent of respondents cited finances as the leading cause of stress in their lives. Financial stress tops the list in many modern polls.
Some people cite finances as the leading cause of stress, citing major purchases they need to make, such as a home or car. Others are stressed by loss of income or mounting credit card debt. For some, financial stress leads to bankruptcy. While college students stress about paying for education, Baby Boomers and older seniors are finding that retirement income can be a major source of stress.
2. Work
It is closely related to finances, as the cause of stress is work. Our jobs or careers cause constant stress. In the LifeCare public opinion survey, 21 percent of the respondents indicated this as the leading cause of stress in life.
How does the workplace cause stress? We are concerned about obtaining and retaining suitable employment. We worry about new types of work or new tasks. We are struggling to climb the career ladder, the demands are overwhelming. Working conditions may change or we may have interpersonal problems at work. Students, especially teenagers and college students, cite schoolwork as a source of stress. Sometimes stress at work is caused by others. Sometimes we bring it on ourselves.
3. Family
The family, although each member is wonderful, is also a leading cause of stress. Arguments erupt with a spouse or other family member. Parents are getting divorced. The children are getting married. The ebb and flow of family life is full of stress. A child moves out – an aging parent moves in.
Family health is also a leading cause of stress. A sick family member, a serious injury, pregnancy, miscarriage or abortion all cause stress. Other family changes also cause stress. Adopting a family member, moving and changing jobs can be stressful for everyone.
4. Personal concerns
Personal worries caused only indirectly by others are another major cause of stress. Lack of control tops the list of personal concerns. Every human has a deep-seated desire to control their own lives. If control is weak or missing in a certain area, we experience stress. For many people, a lack of control over their own time is a major cause of stress. We want to determine when to do tasks at home or at work. Holding down a job, carting the kids to school, taking the family to soccer practice, shopping, and Boy Scout meetings while trying to maintain a household can be quite stressful. You want to be in control of your time rather than letting other people’s needs control it, but that’s not always possible.
We can also participate in stressful legal proceedings. Maybe we are struggling with a bad habit. We may be going through changes. Any personal change can cause stress.
5. Personal health and safety
Most people find that personal health is a leading cause of stress. For some, stress is associated with obesity and the desire to lose weight. For others, stress is a personal habit that affects health and needs to be changed. For example, smoking, abusing alcohol or other drugs. Illness or injury, whether minor or major, can be a leading cause of stress for many people. Incontinence can be an ongoing problem. Personal health is more or less burdensome depending on the degree of severity and our personal perception of health.
Personal safety is also a leading cause of stress. Women, like men, tend to emphasize their own safety and that of others. Adults tend to stress more than youngsters who can be invincible. Crime is a factor as well
6. Personal relationships
Whether it’s friendship, dating, separation, marriage, divorce or remarriage, a relationship can be a leading cause of stress for many. We all want love and it is potentially available in relationships, but getting from A to B can be very stressful. Some people resort to easier-to-manage online relationships. Others withdraw and become hermits. Either way, demands on time, finances, and emotions can cause ongoing stress.
7. Death
Probably the most depressing cause of stress is the death of a loved one or close friend. Even the death of a pet can be stressful. Children are always a source of stress for parents, but when a child dies, the stress is overwhelming. The same is true when a lifelong spouse dies.
Win or lose
The causes of stress change with age. The stressed child who threw a tantrum becomes a young student who is stressed out by the bully at school. The young student becomes a teenager stressed by acne, hormones and dating. A teenager becomes a young adult, trying to deal with the stress of leaving home, adjusting to college life, and managing finances. Life progresses to first jobs, marriage, children and so on. Even if you move to a secluded forest, stress will follow.
It is important to know the main causes of stress. Using this knowledge to overcome unhealthy stress is vital.
