The Ultimate Fighter has become a gem among reality TV staples. Cleverly conceived, well produced, and completely pitched to the large UFC fan base, The Ultimate Fighter brings SpikeTV viewers a diverse collection of Cast members each season. This is ultimately what makes the show tick; the clash of personalities is in a reality show, but in The Ultimate Fighter the personalities enter the octagon and fight each other. As each season progresses, many contestants disappear from public view for one reason or another, and sometimes are never seen again. What has happened to your favorite Ultimate Fighter competitor? Here we profile what’s been going on with some of our favorite fighters from The Ultimate Fighter.
Stephen Bonnar
Bonnar is probably best known for his epic and universally loved The Ultimate Fighter title fight with Forrest Griffin in The Ultimate Fighter 1; a battle he actually lost. Many consider this fight to be one of the best in UFC history, and rightfully so. Since then, however, Bonnar has fallen on hard times. He went on a three-fight winning streak in the Octagon after the fight, all on SpikeTV Ultimate Fight Nights. Then at Ultimate Fight Night 5, he lost a unanimous decision to Rashad Evans. Bonnar then had to fight a rematch with Forrest Griffin at UFC 62 on August 26, 2006. Bonnar lost to Griffin again (by unanimous decision), but those were the least of his worries. Shortly after the fight, Stephan Bonnar tested positive for the use of anabolic steroids, substances banned in the UFC. He hasn’t fought since and his career appears to be in jeopardy. States have yet to make a decision on his UFC status.
Chris Leben
Brash and unflappable, Chris Leben was as dynamic a personality (and fighter) as The Ultimate Fighter has ever seen. In a controversial match early on The Ultimate Fighter 1, Leben lost to Josh Koscheck. Leben complained to UFC President Dana White after the fight that Koscheck was just “holding him down” and was not the type of fighter White wanted in the UFC. Leben had to fight again, this time in the semi-finals of The Ultimate Fighter, when Nate Quarry bowed out with an injury. Leben lost again to Kenny Florian. Since The Ultimate Fighter 1, Leben has had a pound-for-pound record, going 6-1-0 in UFC competition, losing only to Anderson Silva, but defeating quality fighters such as Jorge Rivera, Edwin Dewees and Jorge Santiago. Leben is a personality that the Ultimate Fighting Championship should eagerly utilize. He had trained at AMC Pankration in Seattle, but currently Leben practices in Portland, Oregon.
Rashad Evans
Despite an eight-inch height difference between Evans and 6’7 Brad Imes, Rashad defeated Imes in The Ultimate Fighter 2 Heavyweight Finals. Success has followed Evans since his victory on The Ultimate Fighter 2, where he won all three of his victories. UFC fights after that. His professional MMA record remains a perfect 14-0-0, and Evans is widely considered a title contender. It should only be a matter of time before Rashad Evans gets his shot.
Joe Stevenson
Stevenson surprised few by winning the interim series of The Ultimate Fighter 2. At only 5’7, he defeated Luke Cummon in the finals of The Ultimate Fighter by unanimous decision. He lost his first match since The Ultimate Fighter to Josh Neer at Ultimate Fight Night 4. However, Stevenson easily won his next bout by doctor’s stoppage against Yves Edwards at UFC 61. Stevenson is one of the most experienced fighters to ever appear. Ultimate Fighter; he achieved a professional record of 24-6-0 before appearing on reality television.
