Writing the Short Story: How to Write a Gripping Ending to a Story
“Have you thought of anything ends?”
“Yes, several, and all dark and unpleasant.”
“Oh, that won’t do! Books are supposed to have a happy ending. How about this: and they all settled down and lived together happily ever after?”
“It’ll be fine if it ever comes to that.”
“Ah! And where will they live? I often wonder that.”
JRR Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring.
When it comes to creative writing, finishing a story is one of the hardest parts of the writing process for me. When the last line is written or written, and there is nothing else for the characters to do, and the victory is won and the opponent vanquished – I shed a tear. You may think I’m being melodramatic, but I’ve just finished my first novel. And I feel a sense of satisfaction tinged with sadness.
But all stories have to come to an end, right? So when it comes to a literary masterpiece, one must ask, “Have you thought about the ending?” (Tolkien).
As with the beginning of a story, there are many ways to end fiction. You can choose to end your story with a satisfying conclusion – all loose ends neatly tied up. Most of us enjoy this kind of ending. The neat and tidy ending is so popular because, unlike in real life, a story can provide us with a guaranteed resolution to a conflict. We can have the happy ending we want and everyone lives “happily ever after”.
But for those of us who choose to defy traditional storytelling techniques, there is the option of a “surprise ending” or an “open ending.” By daring to be different, we can ultimately leave the reader wanting more. So let’s go a step further and explore the different ways you can craft your ending to leave an indelible impression on your reader. Here are five ways to write a gripping conclusion to a story.
This type of ending is when the story ends in a mirror image of the beginning. It’s a detour where the characters return to the same scene at the beginning of the story, but they’ve learned valuable lessons. They may look or still be dressed the same, but they have been transformed on the inside.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis is one of the best examples I can think of. Although the children do not write Narnia in the first paragraph, but in the first couple of pages, the ending reflects this part of the story. As at the beginning, the children pop out of the wardrobe and are met again by the footsteps of Mrs. Macready and her guests in the corridor.
A surprising ending.
Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” is a great example of a surprise ending. At first, Mrs. Mallard is informed that her husband has died in a tragic train accident. Most of the narrative focuses on Mrs. Mallard’s mixed feelings about her husband’s sudden death and reveals some interesting revelations about his violent nature.
As her “streams of consciousness” show her dramatic transition from a grief-stricken widow to a woman who has discovered the guilty pleasure of receiving the huge revelation that she is now free from her husband’s suffocating control, there is a sly twist at the end. Brently Mallard was well and truly alive, and seeing him at the bottom of the stairs not only fatally shocked his wife, it shocked me too. Such an ending is not everyone’s ideal ending, but Chopin’s ironic and tragic twist contributed to the overall tragic mood of the story.
A novel by Daphne Du Maurier House on the Strand is one of the best examples of an “open” ending I’ve ever read. While I’m a fan of defying traditional narrative expectations, I was initially quite disappointed by his choice of ending. I really wanted to know what happened to the main character, Dick Young, who had become addicted to a drug that allowed him to travel back in time to the 15th century in Kilmarch, Cornwall.
At the end of the novel, Young is back in the safety of his home and under the expert care of a doctor. But while on the phone to his wife, he suddenly loses consciousness, and that’s where the novel ends. Du Maurier had left me high and dry, and I was devastated. I wanted to know what happened to Dick, did he die? Did he return to the past? So many questions and no answers.
But in retrospect, Du Maurier’s “open” ending was another example of clever writing. He had offered me the chance to dream of my own end. As a passive reader, he gave me narrative power and urged me to write my own conclusions and be the final decider of Dick Young’s fate.
The trick ends.
Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is a good example of a gimmick ending. At the beginning of the story, a man is hanged. Bierce then proceeds to provide a rather tightly packed account of the man’s supposed dramatic escape. But it’s not until the man arrives at his home and family that we’re told that “Peyton Farquhar was dead; his body, with a broken neck, swaying lightly from side to side under the Owl Creek bridge.”
In writing this story, Bierce had invoked the idea that moments before death a person can hallucinate, and he uses this to trick us into believing that Peyton had cleverly escaped his death sentence. As his trick ends, Bierce reveals that Peyton had only imagined that he had successfully cheated death!
End of summary.
This technique is used a lot in filmmaking. At the end of the film, the viewer is presented with a written summary of each character’s endings – they get married, succeed in business, etc. As in movies, this choice of ending for a work of fiction gives the reader a feeling – a good ending. The hero or heroine wins, the villains are punished, and justice is done.
I’ve only given you a few options to finish your story. But whatever you decide to choose, your intention must always be to leave a lasting impression or a dynamic image in the reader’s mind. As writers, we have the power to entertain and inspire the reader, but also to challenge their literary expectations.
