Farm Life with Sam

Sam is a Belgian horse that weighs about 1900 pounds and stands about 17.3 hands tall. He is rolled and about 27 years old. Now life with Sam can be interesting. If he ever found out how big he was, there would be no stopping him.

I think one of the funniest episodes with Sam so far has been with our friends little Jack Russell who decided to take Sam in. This little guy was going to eat Sam alive. Our daughter rode Sam and came around the house not knowing TJ was gone. We were in the house and heard her barking and growling. Of course, our daughter stopped Sam, who just stood there looking at this little dog. Sam didn’t know what to think of TJ. It took some doing, but TJ was convinced to go in. Sam never jumped.

Sam is my baby. If he tries to let the goats out, I can open the back door and yell – SAM BACK! He stops, takes a few steps back, and looks around to see where I am. Sometimes I close the door to see what he’s doing. Usually he just walks away in peace.

The only thing I’ve ever seen that bother Sam is high winds – I’m talking 45mph plus winds. Now it is impressive to see that big horse with all four hooves in the air. We’ve seen him once in the back. We were filling the storage tank and my son, over six feet tall, was standing next to Sam. Bozey, our 21-year-old quarter horse, decided to hit the hose, causing water to go up Sam’s nose. Sam raised and our son got to see first hand how big Sam is.

Now water is a big problem for our horses. Our daughter was filling a storage tank in the colt’s stall when she heard a commotion. There, Bozey played with the hose and Smokey, his colt, tried to drink from the tank. Just as our daughter stepped on the fence to get the hose from Bozey, Smokey grabbed the end of it and Liotti our daughter.

When it’s hot here (most of the year), our horses love to be hosed down, so it can take time to fill the storage tanks. They love to bathe, but like most horses, they immediately lie down in the sand and roll around.

Sam is forever standing to let the kids sit on him to take their picture. He loves kids and our grandkids love being on a lead so they can ride with him. Our chickens and roosters can walk around and under him. We even had a pygmy goat that came out and stood between Sam’s hind legs. Sam froze. We froze so we can summarize the situation. Little Billy took off running and we set out to catch him. Sam never jumped.

Sam’s previous owner has told us stories of how he stops, looks and listens at intersections. I truly believe he is one of the smartest horses I have seen in a long time. Both Sam and Bozey take direction from me without even being on the lead line. This is very helpful if they come off.

We thought we were forgetting to lock the pasture gate, but we really couldn’t believe after all these years that it would happen regularly. Well, Bozey was to blame. The last time he let Sam and himself out was at midnight. I heard Smokey having a seizure and got up to see what was going on. There, standing at the back door, were Sam and Bozey. It was like they knew they had done something wrong and were there to confess. We walked them back to their pasture and went back to sleep.

Bozey was sick and at a standstill. He was ready to run and roll, but I wasn’t quite ready to let him go. He saw his chance to get out and ran free across the yard and into the woods. I stepped out of his pen, yelled and pointed at his gate. He stopped, turned, and reluctantly trotted back to the pen.

I have been truly blessed with Sam and Bozey. Like everyone else who has lived on a farm or ranch, we have had animals that have tested our patience. Well-trained animals cannot be replaced. Sam and Bozey have helped create wonderful family memories and I’m sure we’ll continue to do so for some time to come.
