Is Your Insomnia Just a Bad Habit?

Many of us who suffer from insomnia can actually pinpoint the time when it started. It could be the death of a loved one, exams or a stressful relationship. But since then we haven’t been able to sleep well.

Even though the triggering event is over and no longer affects us, our sleep continues to suffer. This means that we have actually learned to sleep poorly, and this is what we have come to expect. We believe that we are bad sleepers and therefore we will continue to sleep badly.

Our lack of sleep is actually just a bad habit!

Hey, that’s really good news! Habits can be broken and beliefs changed with little effort. Sometimes understanding this can be enough for us to experience better sleep.

However, it usually requires a little more work. Habits can be pretty hard to set in (as any smoker will attest!) We need to change the belief that we don’t sleep well to the belief that we enjoy deep and restful sleep every night.

Confirmations work well. Affirmation is when we repeat positive statements to ourselves over and over until our subconscious mind accepts it and turns our bad habits into good ones.

A lot of people poo pah insurance saying, “I’ve tried them and they don’t work.” Well they work but you have to maintain them. Don’t confirm for a few days and give up. Affirmations can take weeks to have a positive effect.

Another reason reassurances may not work is because we have trouble believing them. Our rational mind teases all the time. For example, if we claim, “I sleep a good 8 hours every night,” we think to ourselves, “That’s rubbish! I’ll be lucky if I get 4 hours a night!”

So make your assurances believable. Try to affirm: “I sleep better and wake up more refreshed.”

Another helpful tip is to say your affirmations when you are relaxed. Then your subconscious mind is most receptive and accepts suggestions more easily. Try it during a relaxing meditation, last thing at night or when you’ve just woken up.

If you have the odd night where sleep refuses to come no matter what, try to relax and accept this as part of being normal. Even the best sleepers have nights like this. Just lie still and remember that you still get some benefit from just resting and relaxing.
