Lung Cancer Prognosis – Signs and Symptoms That Should Alert You
The early symptoms of lung cancer are quite similar to those of other diseases, which often makes it difficult to diagnose lung cancer before it has progressed further. The fact that up to 25 percent of people with lung cancer may not have symptoms makes it even more difficult to get an early diagnosis.
During a physical exam, a doctor considers factors such as age, occupation, and family history to form an idea of how a patient’s background affects his or her likelihood that certain symptoms are due to lung cancer or a more common condition.
While a 60-year-old man who has smoked for four decades is a likely candidate for lung cancer, an 18-year-old woman who has not smoked is much less likely.
Usually, the first noticeable symptom of the disease is a recurrent cough, which is the primary symptom in about 80 percent of cases. This is commonly known as “smoker’s cough” because it is so common in regular smokers. Nerve endings in the body’s airways try to remove foreign substances, such as smoking deposits; lung cancer affects these cells and thus the success of the lung’s self-regulatory mechanism. If a patient has been diagnosed with lung cancer and has never had a smoker’s cough, he probably has a tumor in a smaller passage, which is why there is less external irritation.
Coughing up blood is another common symptom and is caused by bleeding from the tumor as the tumor grows and the patient expels blood-tainted mucus. If there is noticeable blood in the sputum, you should see a doctor as soon as possible so that the cause of the problem can be determined.
The third common symptom is wheezing, which is caused by airway obstruction due to tumor growth. Some wheezing can be heard with the naked ear, while sometimes wheezing can only be detected with a doctor’s stethoscope as the patient breathes.
Despite modern treatment methods, the typical prognosis for lung cancer in terms of survival is quite poor. Often, a final diagnosis is only possible when the cancer has already progressed far.
If you or a loved one has noticed any of the above symptoms, it is important to make an appointment with your doctor – early diagnosis greatly increases your chances of recovery.
