Exercise at Christmas Without the Gym

Gyms are pretty empty at Christmas time. Everyone is so busy with preparations, parties and visiting people that it’s hard to fit in, get dressed and go through routines as regularly as the rest of the year.

But don’t give up on exercise entirely – you’ll find it much harder to get back into the swing of things if you do. Make exercise part of the fun and keep yourself fit until it’s time to hit the gym in January. Maybe you’ll enjoy the options so much you’ll never go back!

1. Do less

Just do ten minutes if that’s all you can manage. Ten minutes of anything – walking around the house or taking the stairs or jumping or bouncing – whatever suits your fitness level and the equipment you have at home. You can do it in the morning before you shower and it will give you energy for everything you have to do. If you can also join 10 minutes later, even better. You’ll keep fit and burn a few calories you can probably do this year.

2. Do the class at home

Fitness videos are great if you don’t have a lot of time. You can’t go to the gym – you have everything you need at home. You can pick them up for almost free in charity shops or treat yourself to one or two for Christmas. And it doesn’t matter if you don’t know the moves or have the latest exercise equipment – no one is watching!

3. Empty

No doubt you need to get your home ready for visiting friends and family, so get some practice in. Put a lot of energy into it! Remove all clutter and clean, Vacuum and polish everything until it shines. You’ll be ready for guests, maintain your fitness and burn calories at the same time.

4. Active fun

If there are a lot of guests and you can’t get the usual fitness in shape, organize active fun for everyone! You can all go bowling or ice skating. Or try a game of charades or Twister. If it snows, you can go sledding or organize a snowman building competition. At least get them all out for a walk every day regardless of the weather. There are sure to be some lights to go see or a local carol service to attend.

5. Dance the Night Away

Don’t be a wallflower. Take every opportunity to dance at a party (it also keeps you away from the buffet table) or just invite your partner to dance on vacation. You’ll have fun, you’ll get closer and it’s great exercise. Depending on the speed, dancing takes 270-540 calories per hour.

6. Offer a helping hand

Be active by volunteering your services in your community. You can help serve lunch at a homeless shelter or nursing home. Or just help your neighbors with chores and snow plowing. You’ll get a warm glow from reaching out and exercising, and you’ll feel a lot better than sitting around watching reruns of “White Christmas” all afternoon.

7. Escape

And if all else fails, book a skiing holiday for your Christmas break next year instead of staying at home. There’s a whole year to save (and avoid arguments when you tell your family you’re going next year!) Skiing is great exercise and you’ll get back in shape, refreshed and without those few extra pounds you gained over Christmas.
