The Night Shift
A night shift is both the time slot of a 24-hour work operation that occurs between sunset and sunrise, and the crew works during that time slot. Most people fall asleep at night, although many consider that time to seek fun and joy in many forms. But work habits are the main reason why people work at night and sleep during the day.
Night can be a scary time in nature. Animals that eat plants often move in the “shadow of darkness”. Carnivores hunt grazers mostly at night, and many of them work night shifts with other carnivore species to avoid cross-purposes when hunting the same patch of land. I learned about it years ago when I captured a young raccoon in a live trap. My goal was to catch him and move him out of my vegetable garden. Raccoons are omnivores, which means they can be carnivores when the opportunity arises.
I found the captured raccoon just before dusk and left him in the trap to show my family when they woke up. Shortly after leaving, I heard a strange barking from the garden. It was a fox (another carnivore) that was very angry with the raccoon because it was on the hunting grounds during “fox time”. The raccoon knew that. He wagged his tail nervously and had a look on his face as if the fox had the right to scold him for being wrong.
The term “night” has synonyms, one of which is “darkness”. Think goodness can be expressed as sunshine or ‘light’. Darkness would then be a time of evil. In practice it makes sense, as those who would go abroad to do evil would welcome an atmospheric state of darkness so that they can be protected (not seen or caught) when they do evil and escape.
People tend to define evil as something as opposed to what they want to do, a definition that can place a person on the wrong side of the law (society’s rules of conduct) in government and/or on the wrong side of God. An evil act, called sin, is a human action that violates or opposes God’s purpose. You may be familiar with the Ten Commandments. Because they were written in Elizabethan English, seven of them begin with the words “Thou shalt not,” two begin with the action verbs “Remember” and “Honor.” The first commandment is God’s authoritative statement to the Hebrews. He told them the one thing that hurt him the most.
The Christian Bible is a collection of humanity’s encounters with God. The stories depict people trying to connect with God, pray, worship and live their lives in a way that pleases God. But they all fall short of what God expects them to be. So he helps them. Throughout the Old Testament of the Bible, you see examples of God teaching, guiding and helping. But he expects that his efforts will bear fruit, that humanity will fully turn back to him. Over time, prophets, men, were given visions from God, foretold something great to come, and they advised the Hebrews to prepare for that great thing, the coming Messiah, the Christ.
The New Testament of the Christian Bible tells about this prophecy it was filled. Jesus, who called himself the “Son of Man” to publicly draw attention to the fact that he was born of a human mother, was also the Son of God. He had to figure it out for himself, and he did it by doing what we all should do: He prayed. Prayer is communication, and as God decided, he communicated back to Jesus, his Son, through prayer. The communications between God and His Son must have been extraordinary, but they were private conversations and we know next to nothing about them. We know from the writings of the New Testament that Jesus prayed when he was in synagogues and Jewish temples. But he prayed often wherever he was.
The darkness was at its deepest for Jesus as he approached the time when he would be sacrificed for mankind. Because he had little time to help his disciples understand what he was going to experience and give them the decision to grow the Christian church after his death and resurrection, Jesus continued to pray to God. Online search Matthew 27:46. The human side of Jesus felt the excruciating pain of human cruelty, abuse, humiliation, and finally crucifixion. Jesus prayed to God to spare him from the waiting sacrifice.
Online search Luke 22:42. It must have broken God’s heart. How would you feel if your son asked you in fear to protect him and you didn’t? Jesus didn’t say he wouldn’t do his job, but in human form he cut, bled, and suffered every possible physical and mental injury that any of us can suffer. Of course, he would like to leave these experiences out. In that prayer he represented all mankind suffering from such things. But for God this was a turning point. God had already decided that all members of the human race did not deserve mercy. He must have seen that this was the human side of Jesus begging him for mercy. Yet Jesus’ undeserved sacrifice was a means of uniting humanity with God’s grace.
Online search Matthew 27: 45-46. Note that the disciple Matthew observed “darkness coming over the earth” between noon and three in the evening during Jesus’ crucifixion. After suffering terribly on the cross for three hours, Jesus prayed a question to God. Shortly after that prayer, Jesus’ sacrifice was completed. Read the entire chapter of Matthew to understand that Jesus’ death was not the end of prophecy. His sacrifice began the next steps, the defeat of Jesus’ death, his resurrection, and God’s giving him authority over all heaven and earth. Eleven disciples of Jesus decided to go tell the wonderful story of God’s gift of his only son. You know the rest. Today, Jesus is not a footnote in history. He is the living God. Today, even those who choose to live their lives only for themselves know this story.
